what does the number mean?

So I'm just about done stripping the interior on the 924 and got the carbon fiber dash all finished finally. I'm almost to the point where i can go ahead and start working on a cage and suspension etc.

I noticed... up near the window, now that the dash is removed, on the paint is a number imprinted into the metal. it's obviously factory. what is it? It's up near the window on the passenger side. i can get pics later... figured i'd ask.

Umm... The VIN?

I believe there is also a chassis ID # stamped up that way but it's been a while. It is related to the VIN # IIRC. There are a few others in "hidden" locations to assist with stolen car ID/recovery.

no the vin is near the window by the dash.

this literally is up on the firewall. you wouldn't see it unless you tore the dash out of the car.

i will write it down or get a pic when i get home.

Good info, thank you! It is a strange feeling getting in a car with no interior, but also a good one now

It's part of the VIN/Chassis ID, they are located not only in a couple of "hidden" places on the body, but also on some of the major parts. Manufacturers started putting these "hidden numbers" on cars 50+ years ago to aid in stolen vehicle recovery where the "visible" VIN had been altered or removed. Back when cars still had frames, the VIN was also stamped on the frame.

The two different numbers on the 924 from the link posted by John, are because the chassis is produced as an RoW assembly (meaning the chassis can be shipped anywhere in the world until "country specific" i.e. engine, exhaust etc subassemblies are installed), and the installation of the engine made it "country specific", hence the "AAO" and "ZZZ" in the VIN
