standard trans shifter neutral pos

where does your gearshift sit in neutral? I previously had a shop do a rebuild on the transaxle and now it seems the gear shift really leans right! (rest spot is pretty much below 5th gear). Seems to have a little bit of a hang up sometimes out of fifth gear. Wouldn't call it a hang up but if it moves up just a tab towards 5th it won't move back and forth freely. Easy to miss 3rd gear while shifting...

The intermediate rod is not properly adjusted. Look at the top of your transmission, you will see where the intermediate rod attaches to the transmission linkage. At the top of this junction you will see a bolt that runs through a flat bar.

With the transmission in neutral, break this nut loose and slide the flat bar until your shifter is located in the center of the console (directly between 3 - 4 gear), tighten the bolt and your shifter should remain in the neutral slot between 3 - 4 gear.

If you have the factory service manuals (or service manual cd), adjusting instructions are located in the transmission book, section 34 page 34-5. Instructions are on pages 124-125 in the Haynes Manual.

This is odd, considering there's a detent in the rod for the conical bolt at the tranny end. The linkage is pretty much self-aligning. Another thing to check is the shifter mount bolted to the torque tube, but that's more fore and aft adjustment.

There is an adjustment on top of the transaxle shift linkage.

Slam....slide under the car, I think you will find that you have the same adjustment, the pictures in Haynes manual are pretty much taken on an early car. You really can't see the slot in that piece, as the nut pretty much hides it. It is normally something that does not get messed with, but the pieces need to be removed to tear down the trans for rebuilding.

bazar01...thanks for posting the pic, I looked and couldn't find one. With your pics, and the instructions I sent he should be in good shape.

windwaiver...if you adjust the shifter (the actual shifter in the car) to lean toward the rear of the car at an 85 degree angle, when you have the correct position on the trans adjustment, the shifter will be straight up and down. The shifter is adjusted by lifting the shift boot and loosening the two 10mm bolts on the plate that mounts to the torque tube. If that sounds confusing, I pm'd you my phone number, call me and I'll walk you through it.

Phil

Thanks for the tip, Phil. I've had a few trannys out but simply removed that whole assembly in one piece. Never had any adjustment to do afterwards with the exception of the shifter mount.

Not a problem, glad I could be of some assistance.

As long as you don't loosen that particular bolt, the intermediate shaft will always stay properly aligned, and as I said, unless you tear the trans down (or put on the short shift kit), you will never have to make that adustment.

+1 ernie

Ok windwaiver and slam, the adjustment is at nut "C" and bolt "D" on the picture ernie posted.

Bolt "A" is to REMOVE the intermediate shaft from trans, and bolt "B" is to take the adjustment arm OFF the transmission. A and B will not concern you windwaiver. Bolt "A" should be have loctite on the threads and then be safety wired around the shaft per Porsche service manual. Years ago, stupid me did not loctite or safety wire the bolt, and sure enough, it vibrated out about 50 miles from home....can you say stuck in 5th gear? Then you say Thank You AAA.
