Okay...I'm trying to do a tune up on my car...but something just keeps getting in the way. This morning, I took off the front lip and undercarriage pan only to find a MESS. Just look at the pictures. Is there an easy way to clean it up? If not, how should I go about de-greasing...well...everything. I can't tell where the oil is coming from until I clean it all up. I did buy a new seal kit for the tune up, though.
Also, for the parts that are rusted...any suggestions on what to do? Lastly...where is the drain bolt for the block coolant and the drain bolt for the radiator? I looked in my Haynes and it was of no help. Oh. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

I believe that blue plastic thing that you ask "what is this?" is the drain plug for your radiator. Be especially careful removing it as they're old and tend to be brittle. It's probably a good idea to have a new one (from Porsche) ready to go in when you do change the coolant.
Can't really help too much on the oil leaks... ![]() Good Luck!

The little round thing with the two leads on top is the oil sender unit. The blue thing is drain plug for radiator. It is brittle.
Leaks can come from anywhere. You'll need to clean the engine to find where the leaks are. Clean it with an engine cleaner and a hose following the instructions on the spray can. Another way to find it without cleaning is to get the oil additive that glows under black light. That will show the leak without cleaning the engine. Typical leaks (that I've had) are balance shaft housings, balance shaft seals, balance shaft end plug, oil sender units, oil pan gasket, gasket between oil filter housing and block. As the years go by the oil pan gasket is slowly cooked where it is near the exhaust. Mine is leaking there and I am currently changing the gasket and rod bearing while I'm at it. |

That looked like mine...... about a year ago.
My main culprits were the camshaft gasket, oilcooler gasket (external oil leak, thank goodness no coolant mixing with oil), trasmission oil leak (cooler), coolant leak, oil pan gasket etc............you name it.............. but no front seals! go figure. Looking at your pics I would definitely guess the camshaft gasket has seen better days..........but if you havent changed your front seals, that would definitely be a place to start. Use BRAKE CLEANER ............comes in aerosol cans........works the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Make sure engine is cool Once you have it all clean, it will slowly become apparent where the leaks come from... The problem with all that oil all over the place, it has a tendancy to brake down rubber components (motor mounts, bushings, hoses ....etc), so if you keep it like that it just causes something else to break in the future. THe blue plug is the drain plug....and it broke on me!! and to make matters worse.........the plastic on the radiator broke as well........had to use some plastic weld (worked great) and replaced the drain spout by tapping a new one in (metal). Good luck

Drain plug for the coolant from the block is located on the right rear of your block at the top near the head. Its directly under the 4th exhaust port. I think its a 15mm or 17mm plug.

I'm sure you were'nt. But the word Holy, should only be used in the context it was intended for i.e. Belonging to, derived from, or associated with a divine power; sacred That don't describe words such as "smoke" "hell" whatever. Hey, I used to watch Batman you know, "Holy scarlet jingle bells, Batman" or what ever. Just 'cos ppl use a term incorrectly or out of context dont make it right . Alrighty, just a lil update:
The oil in the pictures I posted is actually power steering fluid. I drained my power steering system and disconnected the resevoir, only to find small cracks in the two hoses coming out of it. As for the rust...well...I haven't quite done anything about it yet. However, I did find more oil or something to that effect around the turbo last night. I'll get some more pictures later today...
