944 diagnostics

I am certainly no expert in this, but depending on what year your S2 is, it may be quite easy--for later model S2 (after 1990) apparently a combination of using the key in the ignition and pressing the gas pedal you can get the check engine light to flash the code. I have not tested this as my car is a 1990 and doesn't have this feature. Unfortunately, I thought I bookmarked the instructions but I cannot find it at the moment. If I do, I will provide link. But, I do know the instructions are on line.

If your car is 89-90, I am searching for the answer myself.

Hopefully someone else will post, for those years.

well there are three answers to this.....

Porsche PIWIS, officially 5 figures to play with, lets you do all sorts of fun stuff, read fault codes, reprogram the dme, etc.....you can find bosche kts 520, cables, and harddrives/laptops loaded with the software for $4-5k on ebay.

I only mentioned that because searching for PIWIS on ebay will turn up $30-60 PIWIS cables....that arent really PIWIS....THESE WILL NOT LET YOU TUNE YOUR DME. But they will work for code read/reset....90-92 s2 only...They are bootleg knockoffs of the Durametric system ($300ish).....Im pretty sure the s2 only gets the addition of airbag codes with the durametric/knockoffs....but some of the newer porsches EVERYTHING down to a/c and seat memory can be read.

ODB2 scanners are strictly for emmissions and basic engine functions so they wont be able to read as much as the durametric/knockoffs....

Not sure it works the same for the s2 as the 968 but....
Durametric Software - How to read fault codes on Porsche 968

with engine off, ignition in on position
floor the gas until the check engine light flashes (3-5 seconds)
count the flashes...a pause shifts to the next number
The codes are:
* 11 Supply voltage
* 14 Engine temperature sensor 2
* 16 Throttle potentiometer
* 17 Oil temperature sensor
* 18 RPM signal
* 19 Speed signal speedometer
* 21 Air flow sensor
* 23 Oxygen regulation
* 24 Oxygen sensor
* 26 Ignition timing change
* 27 Opening winding of idle stabilizer
* 28 Closing winding of idle stabilizer
* 29 Activation of A/C relay
* 31 Knock sensor 1
* 32 Knock sensor 2
* 33 Control unit faulty
* 34 Hall signal
* 35 VarioCam
* 36 Idle CO potentiometer
* 41 Control unit faulty
* 42 Fuel pump relay (DME-relay)
* 43 Tank ventilation relay
* 45 Check engine warning lamp
* 51 Injection valve cylinder 1
* 52 Injection valve cylinder 2
* 53 Injection valve cylinder 3
* 54 Injection valve cylinder 4

You can clear the codes by
1. With the engine off turn the ignition switch to the "ON" Position.
2. Press the accelerator pedal all the way to the floor for 11 seconds.
