I have a question for those of you with Bursch headers. Did any of you have to remove the exhaust studs before installing the headers??? I was told that you have to in order to install Bursch headers and I just wanna make sure before I buy. Anyone with MSDS? Did you have to remove the studs too? WHich is better MSDS or Bursch?

I've never heard that you HAD to replace them, but I was strongly advised that it would be a good idea to do so (old heat damaged, partially corroded studs vs.new ones).
As I recall, I think it cost an extra $20 or so to get new studs AFJuvat |

AF i'd hate to remove the head again. it was such a pain and i won't do it again unless i'm ready to regrind the camshaft and port match and polish...do you know of any penetrants to use to loosen them up?

I agree with AFJuvat,
I have Bursch on my 87. When I bought the headers I wasn't planning on replacing the studs but after 14 years they have rusted quite a bit. I didn't try but I think you can get the new headers on without the stud removal. (may take some time getting the right angle) I ended up removing the studs and putting new ones in, without the studs there, the headers slide right into place. I like the bursch sound, haven't had a chance to hear msds. Hope this helps See Ya.

I took a good look at the studs and there are no signs of rust on mine for some reason. just a lil bit of heat glazing thats about it. Does this mean that I shouldn't have any problems?

As far as a penetrant goes, PB Blaster works really well, Spray the hell out of them the night before.
Sears also sells a stud extractor (think it is $20) - connects right to a 3/8ths drive. I used that, and extension, and long breaker bar to get mine out. Good Luck AFJuvat |

What all is involved in replacing the studs? I take it from your last post AFJuvat that you can do it from the outside after removing the old headers. Is this right? How are the new ones installed? Do they just screw in or what?
What else is involved in headers? I've never heard about this. Thanks, from another inquiring mind. CD

Yep, they just screw right in. It takes a little effort to get them out due to heat and corrosion, but otherwise, it is a pretty straightforward procedure.
