Adding power locks/keyless entry.

I'm planning to add a security system and would like to add power locks, I'm wondering if it would make more sense/be more cost effective to try to find/install all the parts needed to convert the factory locks to power locks and have the security trigger the factory switch, or to just get aftermarket actuators to move the locks like most installers do when adding keyless entry. I am not concerned about having the key in the door handle working the power locks, only about having the remote lock/unlock the doors. What are all the parts I would need to upgrade to factory power locks? (switch, actuators....)Thank you for your help!!!

Search is usually much easier than starting a new thread.
"Keyless entry" is a good place to start

Keyless Entry

Hi, You will need the door wiring and also the control brain. I saw a control on ebay for not too much money as that is the most expensive part. The actuators are like $25 each and sometimes you can get both for $40. I guess you could splice the wires, but it would be better to have the door lock wire loom for the connectors.

I got all the parts from the junk yard, luckily I have 20th St porsche parts right here in town..you'll need the wiring harness that had the power lock option and all the bracketts and hardware...gonna do this project soon so I'll post some pics on it eventually..got the wiring harness's on ebay for $50, actuators $50, new plastic clips and such $25, door handles that have power door lock microswitches $100, and all the bracketts and plastic cable hold downs $25., new LED lighted door lock buttons $100.there's a lot of stuff to add it and you won't be able to add any kind of aftermarket power lock/security stuff without all of it...

Thanks for all the tips! After reading up on other's success/difficulties with various options, I've decided instead of reconstructing the factory central locking system, and then adding an alarm, I will just get an actuator kit like other people have had luck with, and then install a viper alarm that can trigger the actuators, and also the rear hatch release. I installed a 2 way viper alarm/remote start in my GMC Yukon, and am really happy with it.

I have the actuators in mine and it works like a charm. Dunno about the install, as I had a shop do it for me. It was something like $500 with a two-way remote start/alarm system.

No Alarm is going to stop a determined thief. Theft is one of the reasons to have insurance on the car. If you make it too hard to steal your car all it is going to do is PI$$ them off. They will knife your seats, break all glass out, steal the radio and take off. You still end up with an insurance claim. Just my own experience with an Alarm System. I still lock the doors, a Slim Jim opens the locks, and a common screw driver works as a Key. All the fancy stuff has already been figured out how to get around it.

Cheers,
Larry

I know that-somebody tried to jack the car last September and did four grand in damage. But I still like having an alarm on it.

Two-way systems are nice because they tell you what the car is doing and alert you if there are any issues.

The other reason I had an alarm put in is that the cost wasn't that much higher than just the keyless entry system, and it does help a small amount on the cost of insurance.
