Speedometer not working

When I bought my 1986 944, the speedometer and odometer were not working. I was told it was the cluster and that it came with a spare turbo cluster. I swapped the 2 of them and when the turbo cluster was in none of the gages worked. So I checked the fuses checked the wires and changed the impulse sensor and still the speedometer and odometer won't work. I know the odometer could be the gear but what could the speedometer be?

Speedometer not working

Is the speed sensor installed? Functional? Hooked up? It's on the tranny drivers side.

Are your connections at the rear of the cluster seated firmly? Are the locking tabs broken off?
If they are, you may be getting them caught between the plug and the socket, or, not locking in and pulling loose as you replace the cluster.
A couple of my lock tabs are broken and I have to make sure they actually lock in.
Which reminds me, my speedo in the 6- speed 968 (has the broken tabs) stopped working for a minute yesterday... til I gave it the ol' "technical tap". Need to check those connections.
Also, I have at times, been able to reach up under dash and behind cluster to lock in a tab, but it is a bit tight.

Not sure if it's the same as the 968, but I had a problem with a bad connection on the ABS sensor plug at the left front wheel, which resulted in no speedo or odometer reading.

Mine was the sensor on the transmission, it looked fine visually but when I put my hand on the wires to check the connection the whole unit was loose, in two pieces. Bought a good used one and it works now.
Be nice if it is that simple
