944 Rear Main Seal Advise

Just purchase a 8 NA w/ 175k. It has a small rear main seal leak, so I know a clutch will also be needed. If I only plan on driving this on the weekends, how long do you think I can get out of the current one before she blows? What happens when a rear main seal goes? I plan on doing a v8 swap and want to enjoy this for a while. Figuring I could sell this motor to offset the cost for the V8 swap. Any advise is appreciated. Thanks.

How long before it blows,I don't think anybody here will dare answer that ? migth be tomorrow -a week- a month who knows. One thing is sure if it does let go (specially driving on the highway at crusing speed) your motor migth run out of oil before you realize it. Letting you guess the consequences if it does happen.LOL you migth need that V8 swap a little earlier than plan.

How do you know a clutch will be needed? Based on the miles? When was the clutch last done?

Unless you know for a fact that this is the original clutch, or it's got problems, then you may have years left.

You need to inspect the disc and see how much wear is left - Checking Clutch Disc Wear

Rear main seals can leak for years - they don't fail catastrophically.

pan

I had a large pan i used for weeks before I had to go in for the clutch. In Jag circles we call them kitty boxes. (guess why) If the clutch is solid you can finish the season. Just Keep an eye on the oil. I kept a traveling pan as well so as the car doesn't "mark it's territory" when out and about. You will have to go in there for the clutch soon. You can start collecting parts and get a good price as it is not a rush.

The seal itself most likely wont be going anywhere, but it will probably get worse over time. It's a slow painful process, much like the job of replacing it. Use the red Kaco seal, or the Elring seal. Don't waste time with the black seals. It's possible the oil can eventually creep into the clutch and start contaminating it. If the clutch is nearing the end of it's life, you may as well wait, since it all has to come off to replace the seal anyway. If the clutch has more than half it's life left, I would recommend planning a weekend and slogging through it.

Thanks for all the advice. I need to check the clutch wear, but it feels like its starting to slip. Plus Ive heard once a clutch gets oil on it, its time to get a new clutch.
