Oscilloscope

Found on Flea bay. Mini 2.8" 2Msps ARM DSO-201 Nano Pocket Oscilloscope | eBay

Is this adequate for diagnostics on the 944S?

Good luck with understanding the instructions, judging by the advertising blurb.

At 5MHz, it's very narrow-banded, for a scope. My HP/Agilent digitizing scope can display a 1GHz signal (200x), and does 400 Ms/s (200x). But then, it sold for about 200x the what they are asking for the nano-scope. But it is probably 100x the size and weight of a nano, and probably uses about 1000x the power that a nano would use.

Nano-scopes are definitely cool (and the price is exceptionally reasonable), and I plan on getting one at some point. But right now, I holding out for future generations that have better performance specs. The current one would be an excellent choice for someone who doesn't already have a scope though.

Been thinking about one also for diagnosing things like the ABS system... Let me know how this one works. Given that these cars are 1980s technology (with lots of parts dating back to 1970s technology inherited from the 924 line) the sophistication level of the electronics isn't going to be very high by today's standards, which implies a fairly basic o-scope should work. At least that's how I look at it.

I was just looking at this again, and now I see that I made a mistake. The bandwidth of the nano is only 1MHz, NOT 5! So my full-sized scope actually has 1000x the bandwidth of this nano-scope. I've never actually heard of a scope before that wasn't at least a 5 MHz unit. I suppose 1MHz would be enough to catch most signals on these cars, with the exception of signals within the DME, as it runs at 8MHz.

I am not familiar with this particular piece of equipment, but 1 MHz bandwidth, albeit low, should be OK for any car diagnostic purposes I can think of, as long as we speak of external signals (ignition, injection and so on). It is single channel, which may be a limitation in some cases. If you want to diagnose the internal PCB of the various controllers, you need something else, but that is really another subject alltogether.

I notice the same equipment is also available from dealextreme.com, if you want to go that route. Do read the comments on dealextreme, there seems to be some quality control problems, which the buyers seem to have been able to cope with, but caveat emptor.

On the early cars when you crank the engine the tach should move. If not it is more likely that you may have DME or sensor faults.

What about a 1987 944S?

... and later? I'm sure they do. Ah, go ahead and scratch that. I'm confident enough at this point to say that, I "know" they do. But that only tells you that the crank sensors and the DME (at least in terms of ignition signals) are working properly.
