That get rid of the noise?

And what kind of finish is used on those covers? That lower one looks terrible, what would cause that?

Not too familiar with the twin-cam heads. But at least the part is plastic, so if it does get jammed up somewhere, it should break up before any damage is done, unless pieces block the oil return holes. If it starts sounding any different, or smoke is observed, shut it right down!

What's the sense in coating the cover, especially if it's going to end up looking like that?

Did you replace both bottom & top pads while in there, it's very important to do both at the same time specially if your top pad was broken as shown in the pics the bottom one migth not be to far behind. There something else I don't get ,you said you redone your valve cover, but why is there two off them shown side by side, one seem to be the old one you took off & the other look like it was already done & ready to go????

I did both pads, lower wasn't bad but I replace , I got extra valve cover that ia paint 3 weeks ago , to do this project,,,, I afraid of clicking noise! I will unbolt everything tomorrow and look more careful for the piece of pad missing maybe still there making that noise,, other possibility is that lower pads has special orientation cause both ends are not same!i didn't put that much attention to lower pad when i bolt it on, maybe i screw it wrong and now my chain is rubbing metal or something like that can this happen ??

I hope I didn't move timing and destroy a valve or so!!! maybe tomorrow with valve cover off again, manual turn the engine and check the marks in cams and chain and turned and listen for noise!

Job well done. I had a motor with a terrible metallic grinding noise from the top end. Inspected the cam train and was shocked - no upper pad left at all. Chain had been riding on bare metal and had seriously damaged the tensioner. I'm no metallurgurlist * but guess that this was a long term situation! A few missing cam teeth BUT, thank the gods, no damage that couldn't be put right in a simple bolt in way.

Its good to witness such abuse and the extent in which this "weak link" can cope with criminal neglect and live to fight another day lol

Makes me

IDO944S2____Are you sure you got 7 links apart on the two cam mark/casting lug .The cam marks has to be in the middle of the marks links (as specify in the RL DIY) if your in & out it could mean a full chain link off, suggest you check that out when removing your valves cover.

I don't see how a regular joe could cock it up? The chain will not stretch one link too tight - you would never get the tensioner back in, too lose then the tensioner would'nt take up the slack? Its been a few months now but i'm sure its fool proof for a TDC initial setting? Dunno, but I always count the links as you describe - seems to fall in place with no margin for error?
