Clunk sound when backing up

So i have a new clunk sound. It only happens when i reverse and have the wheels turned. It will clunk one time and then be fine until the next time i back up. It feels like it is in the front right end some where. Does not clunk going forward. It is a 1988 944 NA 5spd.

Any ideas? Thanks.

I had a clunk in the front end that occurred usually when just starting to back up that I thought was struts or upper strut mount bearings, but it turned out to be ball joints. I rebuilt mine with the Rennbay poly-bronze kit, and the front end is tight again and the clunking is gone. The clunking noise comes from excessive play in the ball joint caused by disintegration of the factory plastic ball joint bushings.

So les schwab has confirmed that the lower front ball joints are what is causing the clunk. However they quoted me $1900 bucks just to replace them. They said the whole control arms have to be replaced and you cant do just the bushings. Is this correct? Is there a place i can have mine rebuilt? Or a good aftermarket set?

Thanks.

they can be rebuilt, as white944cup stated. there may be a place that does exchanges, or where you can send yours to be rebuilt. Or you can tackle it yourself, as there are several vids and writeups on the subj.

Im not sure where stanwood is but Wa. is a good place to get help. used to live in Bremerton, bought all of my Pcars when I lived there.
