Hey, need some help/advice on parking break issue
Hi,
I have a 1987 924s and was trying to adjust the parking break. I had made the adjustments at the handle, but it wasn't enough, so i took the rear tires off and adjusted the star as well. It only went up, so i adjusted it a few teeth. However, for some reason, the tire will occasionally lock up, as if something metal is stopping its rotation. it will rotate backwards but will only move forwards 1/4 rotation before 'hitting' what ever it is. As you can probably tell, I am pretty new and have no real idea what it could be. any help or suggestions would be much appreciated. Cheers. |

Sounds like the break is engaging. It is less effective in reverse. Loosen it up. Undo what the last thing you touched was and get the factory manuals with instruction for adjustment. There is an elusive site out there where they can be had for free ir you can buy them.

Remove the rotor, and carefully pry the locking tab away from the back of the star, then turn the star back, don't apply a lot of force to the tab, or you will bend it, you want just enougn clearance to turn the star.
If you can't get it that way, disassemble the parking brake and turn the star in.

Ill give that a try, thanks a lot. Before I do that, Im going to try and loosen the parking break handle adjustment, as it is fully tightened. Maybe that will loosen it off?
Just to add some info...the star will turn back just about one click, and when i do that, it doesnt lock. but after a few turns of the tire, it locks up again. And, before any star adjustment, the parking break out fully lock up, most of the time, but sometimes a full rotation or two of the tire delayed... not sure if that info will help identify the problem... |

I had a similar problem with my 924S parking brake. On mine the springs that hold the pads to the suspension arm were weak and kept coming out (and they have to go in with the hook facing down to lock into position properly).
If it's locking in one direction and then releases in the other direction I would guess one of the shoes is loose or some other part of the mechanism is loose. It took me a few attempts to get everything to stay in place and adjust properly. You should adjust the star first before adjusting the cable, so loosening the cable then starting again might be a good idea. Hope that helps. Mike

It was parts no 15 that caused me problems. They look like you put them in and twist them to hold the shoes to the hub. That looks like it's worked until you use the brake, then the shoes come loose and you have to strip it all down again. They go in with the hook facing down - press them in hard until they click into place really solidly and grab the shoes tight.
Not sure if it's only me that's been confused by that but thought I'd share in case. Mike
