Was my 968 motor swaped out ?? Did I get had? UPDATE 7-18-11 post 42

Trying to understand why my 1993 968 has red paint marks and yellow paint marks around many of the bolts. I also toke off the Cover and see two plugs going no where?
Do I still have a 968 in this car or was it swapped out at some point? I have only had the car for 1 week and the Carfax shows no reason for a motor swap. It runs great and I am prepping it for belts and cam ramps.

Update 7-18-11 happy ending to story ; See post number 42 page three. Thanks all for sharing see ya on the road.

That's either a 968 or 944S2 engine. The valve cover I believe came with a sort of gold paint that eventually fades and chips away.

Edit: Actually the valve cover looks quite different from an actual 968 engine... Maybe it was swapped?

In that picture it looks like there is a plug that goes into the valve cover...Can someone with a 968 confirm this?

Heeltoe914 07-13-2011 07:15 PM

968

Any idea what the two plugs go into? I do not have the same spark plug wire routing like I have seen on other 968.

v2rocket_aka944 07-13-2011 07:30 PM

Appears you have a 968 intake but an S/S2 valve cover. If it is a 968 motor, one of the unplugged wire connectors would go to your Variocam.

968 GUY 07-13-2011 07:53 PM

My best guess is that is an S2 engine.
The plugs go to the variocam and hall sender, neither are on an S2.
Isn't this the project car with a wrecked front?

Heeltoe914 07-13-2011 07:53 PM

Anyone have a pix of where to find the engine number? Looked by intake, alternator no luck.

Heeltoe914 07-13-2011 07:58 PM

Yes it is but not to happy about what I just found?? But after looking closer looks like maybe just the head was changed is that possible???

968 GUY 07-13-2011 08:23 PM

Eng. No. is behind #4 exh. flange.
I suppose just the head could have been changed. Maybe it fits and works fine, but the 968 computer is set up for input from hall sender and output to variocam.
Download workshop manuals from Cannells, parts manuals from Pelican. Will help loads on what goes where, servicing, etc.

Heeltoe914 07-13-2011 09:47 PM

0151/2A. Anybody see that as a 968 engine I. D Number??????

fennacf 07-14-2011 01:32 AM

Here is a link to the engine codes associated with the various models.

Defitniteley not a 968 head, like said it's an S2 one with a 968 intake, not sure 100% but S2 head head don't fit on the 968 3.0 ltr bloc (different water passage). The wire hanging out does go to the variocam, but instead they route the cruise control cable under the spark plugs shroud. How they routed one of the spark plugs wire under that shroud is beyond me.Notice that it's cutting through the boot which is not a good idea.Sorry to say__ heeltoe__ but I think you been roll over a barrel.BTW red & yellow paint marking is normal around many bolts on a 93- 968.If they sold you the car as 968 with a 968 motor and you got proof of it I'll go after those guys ,nobody deserve that.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1310640416.jpgThis how your wires should be routed with a little play in them on your S2 head.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1310640771.jpg93-968

ernie9944 07-14-2011 03:07 AM

Engine code on your 93 should be M4443-42 P.

968 GUY 07-14-2011 04:40 AM

Wire routing is probably not a big concern at the moment. Is the car running?
Who did you buy this from?Is it a salvage title? Ian pretty sure Cali. has some tough laws on misrepresentation of cars condition. I could put paint on every bolt on my car, but doesn't mean a thing. Hopefully someone, and not you, will get burned for this.

Confirmed Motor is a S2 powerplant. M44.41 42L048....
The car has changed hands a few times I don't really feel the guy I got it from really knew it was a swap Maybe maybe not but the title is clean and the car runs great no warning lights of any type and no smoke noise or knocking. So it comes down to do I feel $3600 for the car with a dented fender and a S2 motor swap is something I wont to play with? The Interior is really clean and to make it a nice road car I will go into this car at about another 1500. So is it a $5000 968???? Its not the car I was told and that really sucks yes I can go get my money back but I could also part the car out for two times the money. I enjoy driving it like I said it performs well so maybe I just drive it until the wheels fall off. Its a lot more car than my 86 944. And I am seeing 968 motor show up for sale. Looking forward to your comments.

Also I have confirmed car dose have LSD. Option code 220

wow, that sucks to find out something you bought is not what was claimed! If it were me, i would make sure the maintenance is up to date, and drive it like you own it ;)

also, just because the car has the option code does not mean that the transmission that is actually in the car is an LSD unit...

Hey..... the price was good. I'd probably try to sell it for a small profit (telling the truth of course) and keep looking. You're going to be in the dark when it breaks. More than likely some strange things going on computer wise.

OP I would not give two ****s what the price was, you have been lied to. I would involve the proper authorities on this one. Who is to say the motor isn't stolen? What else has possibly been misrepresented?

Heeltoe914 07-14-2011 06:38 AM

Car has no frame damage no major accident other than the front fender and headlight..
I will be sending a letter to the guy I brought the car from very curious what he knew but I really don't think he knew it either.. he had never actually even driven the car but a few miles. The only reason he was selling the car was due to financial reasons and a divorce.
And yes it is confirmed that it's a limited slip transmission. Car up in the air wheels turn in the same direction.

I agree with the guy who says drive it in till the wheels fall off. I have changed all fluids brake fluid, engine, transmission excetera and now doing the timing belts. The car runs absolutely amazing. Idols perfect pulls hard. I think eventually down the line I will keep my eye open for a 968 power plant at a good price. And if I ever do sell I will be very clear with the next potential buyer.

Thanks for the feedback

$3600 for a 968?

Even if the car has an S2 motor I would say that is a good deal. Do you have any other pictures? You could probably find a decent 968 fender on the classifieds.
