Trans problem? Or shift linkage problem?

I have a 87 944 Turbo.

The problem is that when put in the clutch and shift into neutral, ie., between gears, sometimes when I let the clutch out the gears grind - that is I can hear what sounds like the tips of the gears (which I assume are the ones that were engaged before I shifted into neutral) hitting each other.

Is this a sign of the trans going bad? Or a shift linkage problem? There is a short shift kit of unknown origin on the car.
