Porsche Crest what model, year and Oil Viscosity.

Porsche model specs are slightly different from year to year.

However, front wheel 4 cylinder models are limited. Porsche C30 Specification very Important!!!

Engine Horror! See pics below

Be Blessed, have a great day...

You started your own thread instead of posting a reply.

The manual states 10W-30, 15W-40 for winter and summer, respectively, for my 951... =)

But everyone else seems to like 15-40[synth] or 20w-50[conventional]...

Roger, after rechecking, 15W-40 would be a decent choice (synthetic), otherwise 20w-50 for conventional...

Apparently Syn and Conventional do behave differently when very cold out 0-30F

I highly doubt that it was an oil related failure. There is no main stream oil available to us at any auto parts store that would cause significant damage within 25 miles of changing the oil. Non, nada, nothing, no way, no how.

I have been running out of spec oils for over 100,000 miles in my 944 with no problem at all except a front main oil seal leak. Now, was that because of the oil (Rotella T synthetic, 5w-40, diesel oil) or because I have 190,000 miles and 24 years on the motor?????

Hey! man ,beside starting two oil threads in one week your coming with this BS about some owner not following the Manufactures specs on oil & doing this kind of damage with only 25 miles on his oil change, excuse me to be so blunt but who do you think we are .I've been around cars for a long long time ,from MG TD to 911 to 944 & now a 968 plus a variety of muscle cars & never heard or seen such a thing.Either this guy lost all is oil & kept going or he change it & forgot to put new oil and filter in .Tell you what I'll buy the cheapest oil out there put it in your car & after 25 miles if your motor substain the kind of damage shown you just got a very nice & tip top shape well sorte out low mileage 968 free MINE.

Sorry brother Ernie9944;

Did not want to offend anyone including You, but also like you I have been seeing a lot of threads on some basic vehicle care.

Here's the story behind the Pics on this post.

A local friends son who is 19 yrs old did'nt put the best quality oil in his 1st gen 944 (~140K) infact it was GTX 20w-50 and started his car 84 944 to go on a date when the temperature dropped 6 weeks ago and left the car running in the yard to warm up. When he came back a few 5 min. later and herd a "clank clank clank noise" finally shutting of the engine after. Car would not restart. A few days later he called me.
His dad(has 924S, 951 and graymarket 944 Euro) is besides himself right now.

Son wants my shop to do a project rebuild and turbo conversion now.

It would be bad if someone else didn't learn from my friends sons "Blunder".

Just wanted to give my fellow Porsche lovers/others a heads up to read the manuals, use good sense and speak to the right sources...

That's all.

Grace and Peace to you and all.

I would bet large money that the Castrol had nothing to do with the failure. Castrol has been run by many Porsche enthusiasts for years with no problems and I would consider it a very good oil for a conventional. 20/50 is a little thick for the cold temps, but still, unless it was like 30 below zero, the oil still would not have caused the problem.

Lol man,it does happen that my 944 was born & raise on conventional Castrol GTX 20w50.And also I did started it up & drove it in in pretty cold .I don't think your friend mishap happen because of the brand of oil use, it probably when nuke for some other reason (what about oil starvation cause by a faulty oil pump?)

Sorry, but I've done many rebuilds on every thing from lawnmowers to p-51 mustangs and the first 2 pixs are not a failure that would occur from the wrong oil at idle speeds.

Guru944 you own a Porsche shop and you believe that the wrong viscosity oil did this to an engine?

What is your basis for this assumption?

It has the 85-86 Euro 4.7 2v with headers and freed up exhaust. Never been dyno'd but it should have low 300's for torque and hp. To tell you the truth my 951 feels faster. Maybe it's the way the boost comes on.. I don't know.. and thanks.
