Alternator Issues?

Until yesterday, when I've started up my 85.5, the alt. indicator needle would move upwards, with a slight amount of up and down movement, to settle very steadily, and without this movement, at just above 14. Probably three seconds to get up and settle upon startup. My sense is that this is not normal...and that the needle should move up quickly and steadily as opposed to taking this amount of time and gyrating for a bit as it does.

While driving today, I noticed that the needle has dropped below 14 (like to around 13) ...and also wavers up and down slightly, and at a rate which, while seemingly steady, actually seems to increase and decrease slightly, but not dependent on the RPM's...which has me a bit baffled.

At any rate, the belt seems fine - tightness wise.

Any ideas? And is settling just above 14 a good thing? Thanks!

sounds like the voltage regulator going bad. a easy repair. normal operation it should fluctuate very slightly at startup, but only during the first second or until idle RPM is reached. it may drop occasionally during driving when you turn on a heavy load

Any updates on this?

Having similar issues myself, I'm keen to see whether the VR was your problem...
