Android Install :: I was bored.
Over the weekend I upgraded my phone and wanted to find something to do with my original motorola droid phone. I thought it would make a cool jukebox for the 924S, so I got to brainstorming.
I ended up making a custom box out of balsa/bass wood which I covered with black felt that houses the phone, and replaces the factory ash tray in the center console. My aftermarket headunit has an auxiliary input for the audio, and I wired a 12V DC to USB to turn on with the stereo. All of the wires are concealed, and it turned out to be a pretty clean looking install. I actually set up the wireless to tether with my new phone, so the installed droid has internet access which works great for internet radio, like pandora or iheart radio. I tested out the GPS as well, and it too works great... no problems with acquiring the GPS satellites. The phone is the original Motorola droid from Verizon, and it is running a custom android 2.3.7 rom and is overclocked to 1.1ghz. It is running an app which forces the display to a reverse horizontal setting at boot. I installed Pandora, Iheart radio, google maps and a few other apps. It also powers up/powers down with the car. If i had to do it again, I would make the top lip of the box smaller.... as you see in the photos it actually overhangs the console a little bit. I know its not exactly maintenance related, but since it is installed in my 924S, i thought I would share. Heres a few pictures of the box :: ![]() ![]() ![]() Checking fitment // prior to running the wires :: ![]() Final Install // In Use :: ![]()

very cool, as an Electrical/Computer Engineer still in college I am always looking to do stuff like this in my spare time. Im thinking of a cool way to get some arduino's in to my car possibly for accelerometers and data logging but have not thought up a solid project yet.
Regards Dave

That turned out sweet. If this was just a weekend (I-don't-know-what-to-with-myself) project, you must have mad skills!!! Something like that would take me a month to figure out and another month or so to execute. Great job!

How did you make it to power on/off with the car

You can wire it to the cigarette lighter which has constant power.
I have an older Android phone not in use, so I may play with this idea, though it cannot be in the location that ike229 used.

For those of you interested in instrumenting your car with Arduino, check out my PDuino project at PDuino.
Contributors are welcome, the designs are all made public (circuit boards, enclosures, parts lists), and someday, I hope to get back to it. :/
