2.5L twin cam??

I am not very familiar with the 2.5 twin cam, is it a good motor? I seem to read that it is not? Thanx, The car I am looking at tomorrow has this.

As far as I am concerned Porsche never made a twim cam. Toyota made a very reliable unit.
It maybe a 16 valve model from a 944S

The 16 valve is a DOHC motor. I'll let someone who owns one chime in on whether it's good or not

If it's a 2.5L DOHC, it's a 944S, a good engine, but it does have the additional cam chain pad to consider (they wear and do chip with age) if it breaks it's costly.

Also a bit more complicated when it comes time to change the cam and balance shaft belts, same goes for the 3.0L DOHC 944S2. Suggest you read the procedure located at; Clark's Garage Home Page Look to the last listing in the "camshaft" section.

But they are good reliable engines, just a bit more complicated as noted above.

The 16v 2.5L is a good little motor, I had one I swapped into an 8v car.
Tensioner is the biggie, gotta keep an eye on that.

I owned an S2 which is a bored and stroked M44/40 (2.5L 16v) with a different intake.

Keep in mind that there are 8 more valves, 8 more valve guides, 8 more lifters, 16 more valve springs, 2 more knock sensors, one more cam, a chain, and a tensioner. The timing belt costs 3 times as much as the 8v belt.

You need to use premium gas with it or it will retard timing to the point of 8v power.

On the bright side there are no speed and refrence sensors jammed in the back of the engine compartment.

I really enjoyed the light handiling and simplicity of my 84 and the power was nice on my S2. I think an "S" would be the perfect blend of the two. Put some good pads and tires on it an then some Koni shocks and you would have a really fun car.

On the S there is a single speed/ref sensor on the back of the engine, and there is a horrible intake manifold in the way of getting to it.
