944 Minor Purchase Issues

as a new wrencher I have a few issues I would like to get advice on.

I just purchased a decent condition 944 for $750. it is a euro 944, it was missing the manual sun roof I managed to pick one up for 200. Its on its way.

Some issues I need to fix are:

- Speedometer not working. (havn't tested what could be the problem yet. Would like advice on how to go about this.)

- Clutch Job (I have already recieved some advice on this, but I would like some more indetail guide or intro to clutch jobs etc. I am not quite sure as far as visuals go what to look for. Do keep in mind I have full access to a lift and too many tools to count.)

- Shifter (a short shifter was installed, but something is wrong to where the shifter goes extremely far to the left and right, you can still shift it just goes 3x as far as it should. Or more. I was told it is missing a bolt and is an easy fix. Would like advice)

Thankyou all in advance!

If someone has some pictures to assist with a clutch replacement. That would be awesome!

Hello and welcome to the Pelican Forum (AKA: The nut house).

First of all you will need to give a better description of which 944 you have - what year, and is it an NA, Turbo, S or S2, or Base.

A great source for all kinds of working knowledge for our 944's is:
Clark's Garage Home Page you may use Clark's allot, I know I do.

On the problems with the shifter go to Clark's Garage then on the left side of the main page choose Garage Shop Manual - Then go to "T" for transaxle - then shift mechanism repair. Once there you will see a diagram of what the shift mechanism os all about.

Your problem may be #10 which is a nylon cup bushing that the bottom of the shift lever sits in. the bottom of the shift lever has a ball on it and it sits in the cup bearing, that may be worn out.

If you are referring to a loose screw that could be the problem with the short shifter (Mounted above the Transaxle in the rear of the car). On the diagram at Clark's look at the #19 Set Screw. That set screw is supposed to be safety wired to keep it from loosening. That set screw fastens the rear running shift rod the the Short shifter with a coupling collar. If that is the problem be careful that it doesn't come completely loose as then the car will not shift at all - the rest of that section at Clark's Garage should be very helpful.

Clark's Garage will be very helpful for all of your 944 mechanical endeavors...

Have pfun -

One of the many, complete and lots of pictures.
Check the bearings on the torque tube as well (included in above).

The manual sunroof for $200, purchase $750, I hope you have a fat wallet for the rest.

GL & Welcome,

John

Speedo issue could be a broken cable. Cable runs from front DS wheel to the dash and they wear out. This is on the early - 83 to 85.5 - cars.

Please post your location, as maybe there's a Pelican member close to you who can come and lend a hand and warn you if, say, your car is about to fall and crush your wallet...

The speedo cable runs from the DS wheel to the dash on the 83-85 cars, 85.5 and later cars use an electrical pickup/connection on the trans.

Also check that the shifter is still bolted to the top of the torque tube. The oval plate the shift lever mounts to has 2 bolts, one front and one rear (M8x1.25) if these are missing, the shift lever will float on top of the torque tube.

Porsche Crest Post Pics and First 12 digits of Vin code, Please...

Fullblown 5:

:First Congrats,
It should be really fun to drive once it is up to its OEM full Potenial. ROW 944 is different from German 944 including DME Motronic Programming. That is why VIN details/data is important. We all will do our best to support you and feel free to comment and keep us posted as your new project matures.

A friend has a 83 German car which is very different from his other NA 85, 87 924S and his 87 Turbo...

Thanx.
Later
