exchaust questions..

I have a 86 n/a 944 that is in excelent shape. inside and out.. the time has come for my "baby" to get a new exhaust. I live in san mateo in california. I am new to the US and dont know where to go or not to go.. I have a couple of questions regarding this.

1: Where should I go to get a new exhaust. I have spend hours online and in the yellow pages but nothing and nobody stands out, as beeing any good. Does anyone on this list have any info and/or experiance working with somone that is near me.

2: If I decide to put a test pipe in and bypass the CAT conv. what will happen if the CHP sees that I did that. will I get a slap on the wrist and a fine?

3:I am not looking for an exhaust that is going to make my car sound like a 69 Chev v8. If I remove the CAT conv. would that make it louder?

All help would be really appreciated . and please excuse the questions if they seem a bit dumb . tia

Bursch makes a good aftermarket exhaust. - you can order it here at pelican. It wil make your car a little louder.

They aren't too difficult to install yourself. Just a simple matter of taking out the old one and putting in the new one.

Just soak the nuts/bolts in penetrating oil - PB blaster seems to work the best. When I did mine, I sprayed them down the night before , so they soaked all night - they came right off after that.

Yes, removing your cat or bypassing it is illegal, and you will be fined if you are caught.

Did you all know that is ISN'T illegal to remove your CAT Conv. in Canada, as long as the car is 89 or earlier??

I took the Cat of my Sidekick (1989) and it gets passed every year.

Should I take the Cat off the Porsche?? Any advantages?

It will be a little louder, Also you'll gain a few more horsepower. You will not see a significant difference unless you were to change to a better exhaust system.

Porsche Crest

In California you will have to smog test your car when you renew the registration (is it every year or every other year?) Anyway I think you need the CAT to pass. Some of the guys on this board have done exhaust mods with a hi flow CAT and have reported that they can get a pretty loud exhaust note with a CAT in place.

Thanks for the replies. I was thinking of doing the MSD ignition upgrade but with the exhaust as well. As far as I know, most of the exhaust mods out there end up sacrificing low-end torque, which in turn the MSD improves. So we would have to see what it does on real life. Man I hate it when things look good on paper. But you don’t know if it would work as good in the field
