Engine keeps running until I shut down the lights.

Hello,

just noticed something strange this weekend.
we were driving with the lights on and when I parked and turned
the ignition off, the car kept running. Even with the key out.

then I shut down the lights and the engine stopped.

I also noticed that when I engage the parking lights with the
turn signal stalk, the ignition turns on (also without the key)

no melted wires, fuses all ok.

does anybody have an idea?

(car is a US 944 type II)

Thanks!

Gotta be a cross circuit - where the wires are touching. The question is where.

I guess the first thing I'd do would be to spend some time upsidedown under the dash pulling on wires - maybe with the car running and the ignition off, hoping you find the right wire and when you pull on it, the car shuts off.

Beyond that, I'm not sure what you can do, except dismounting the affected parts of the harness and inspecting them. But that'd be a real flamin' PITA.

Hi Mike,

had the dash removed after purchasing and noticed nothing strange,
this was to remove an old car alarm.

i do know that it used to show a red 'driving lights' in the dash when
the driving lights were on, but now it only shows a green 'parking lights'
when the driving lights and headlights are on.

Greetings,
Johan

This happened to me once. I think i just replaced the ignition switch, and the issue went away.

Unfortunately, I 'm not allowed to drive at night because I have an Oldtimer-registration,
so that's why I discovered it by accident

Did not think of that until now, It gave some troubles with my type 1
a few years ago, but this was a non starting issue.

Think I'll replace the light-switch tomorrow for another one.
Went through the entire wiring loom to remove the alarm and that's all
ok, so it must be switch or relay-related.
