Price check 1987 944S
Hey,
I know nothing is set in stone, but just wanted to do a price check for a 1987 944S. I'm contemplating on keeping or selling. I'ts in great condition. Rebuild top head after timing belt failure, so new chain new chain tensioner and pads new valves (professionally resurfaced new lifters new injectors new belts new dist cap new motor mounts new ac compressor 172,200 miles on it right now, 2200 miles with the rebuilt head. It's black on black, interior in perfect condition, dash has no cracks, all buttons work and have the symbols/prints on them, original clock, cigarette lighter with print, soft supple leather front seats, sunroof works, ac blows cold, paint in great condition. Overall a terrific car, looks great, drives great and is very stock and OEM. Has original window stickers, original radio with unopened sealed manual, car operation manuals in leather cover and would come with full set of original factory workshop manuals (the grey ones). Wheels are not period correct, they're modern Boxster S wheels. ![]() What do you guys this think this will/should go for in the current marked for someone interested in a very original car? Thanks

I wouldn't sell it for less than $5,000 and personally wouldn't sell it at all if it's in such amazing shape and had so much time and work and money put into it. The resale value on the cars doesn't reflect their actual worth (at least to the owners) I think. That does seem to be changing though..

I hope it's worth more than that
at least 7-8 mark... But you never know. It does seem to be changing you say, does it look like the 944 prices are going up?

Spending time/money to fix a car doesn't add to its actual value. Depending on where you live you can always ask for more.. doesn't mean you will get it. Likely would "sell" in the $6K range. But if you think its worth more, then put it on ebay and see what the market says.
To be cruel.. its 25 year old car with nearly 175K miles.

True, but mileage isn't all when they're getting this old, a car with little miles might be worse off being it hasn't been driven much. unless everything has been replaced periodically...

The other issue is, theoretically, prices should be
bottom - 924s Next - 944 next 944S Next 944S2 Next Turbo. And if "great" turbos can be found "all day long" as folks tell us for $4-6K, why would a "lesser performing" model be worth more? I am not saying it couldn't be worth more (hence the ebay idea), but you need the right buyer at the right time. My '87 NA, with 45K miles, I couldn't get an offer over $6K for it. To me, a 175K mile car has seen more use. Sure, it may be well maintained, but the chassis takes the burden.

looks like a great car! but as most of the guys say, its just not that desirable as an S with a traditional bumper, and the miles no one can just ignore. Someone on here could get a great car I hope someone realize that the miles don't really matter as it looks like you have the right work done. But the stories of people finding turbos and S2's for less than four really kills these cars.

Worth at least $7,100 with all that work but these are dark economic days.. buyer's market. Boxster prices are creeping down to under $7k for driveable 160,000 mile 1997-98's. Hold onto it till after the election to see if optimism surges.

A true salesman.......
For me 172 is high, and is the main reason it will not go for much more than 6.

You know as well as I do that "Great" turbos cannot be found for 4 - 6K "all day long" Depends what your idea of great is I guess. Most men are willing to overlook a lot of flaws to get their hands on a fast car, you see this same theory in action when men chase a hot piece of ass. Quote:

The great turbos here are in the 11-13k range. I guess you have to define "great".

I search CraigList every day for parts and regularly see turbo's in the 4-6K range. Here's one that's been listed daily for a couple of months now. Seems decent and has a recent front of the engine service just like yours. 1986 PORSCHE 944 TURBO**5SPD**NEW TIMING BELT**LEATHER**BBS**GORGEOUS** Sorry to be picky but the only maintenance you've listed was related to the broken belt. If I were to pay 7-8K for a 944 I would also expect to see maintenance listed for the fuel system, cooling, clutch, brakes, suspension, etc. not just switches with the symbols still on them. I don't know you, your car or the circumstances that allowed the belt to break so no offense but I'm leary of pretty examples with little maintanance records. The best way to get your money back out of one of these cars is to drive it for a long, long time. Good luck with your decision. Bruce |

I really do hate seeing someone try to ask an outrageous price for their high mileage, repaired broken timing belt, non turbo 944. It honestly makes us all look bad.
You're not "flipping" this car are you? Because that's even worse. |

What do you consider outrageous asking price? I also see a lot of cars that have suspisously low mileage out there, don't consider 172k miles that much though, but its not a concourse car. But I wouldn't want to own a concourse car I couldn't drive though, but that's my opinion
![]() I bought it with the broken timingbelt because I wanted to trade up to the S. Not trying to flip it, doubt there's any profit to be made on these cars. So if you think 8k is outrageous, do you think its more in the 6k range as the other guy suggested? In reply to VOTS89, I also changed waterpump, fuel filter and pump, icu, radiator has been replaced recently, clutch. Brakes have been changed along with slotted rotors (they came with it). Did I mention new injector? New hallsensor and new speed/ref sensor. Have service records form previous owner as well as original porsche shop stamps and records. But there seems to be a gap between the last dealer shop service and the prev owner. This is just an inqury, and I know the market decides, but wanted to know aprox what it or similar cars were going for. Thanks

Your car has some SERIOUS curb appeal and I'll bet you get compliments everywhere you go! You've asked for a number. If you have recent documentation for all the work you listed I'd be willing to give you $4,750 for your car and that's if it passes a buyers inspection/leak-down test by a qualified mechanic. You claim the clutch/foe have been serviced, that's two big maintenance items out of the way. However the mileage is much higher than other cars I see advertised on a regular basis. I won't give you credit for having the head done, that was reworked due to a failure of a critical component that we all know can't be ignored but probably was. I like your car and would keep it if it were mine. Bruce |

Ditto to the above, you will get your money's worth by keeping the car, driving it and enjoying it. That will be much higher than any re-sale you'll get for it.

Thanks guys. I'm keeping it, and for 4-5k sales price i'd keep it regardless of getting a new car. This one runs great and it's a fun ride. Maybe they'll appreciate more down the line when there's less of them. See cars getting parted out weekly...
appreciate everyone's input!
