944S2 Hall Sender - How hard to replace?

Sooo like many on this board my hall sender plug went brittle and has now fallen apart leaving the the wire terminals exposed (but still plugged into each other).

I bought a new hall sender and set about to replace it. Distributor cap off. Rotor off. Then the little bolts that hold the outer of the two alloy metal castings in place.

That is where I got stuck becasue it looks to me like the timing belt pulley needs to come off to replace this and I don't really want to do that.

Has anyone been able to get behind that pulley to replace the hall sender WITHOUT taking the cam pulley off? I'd be interested in tools and techniques here.

Many thanks!

Have done this. What you need to do is take the camshaft cover off. Once you have that off it is relatively easy to get to the little bolt that holds the bracket on. You will also find the new hall sensor plug will not mount in the same location as the replacements have a shorter lead. I just cable tied mine to the bracket instead.

Hope this helps

Question: Did you guys notice anything different when the sensor crumbled? Mine has been like that for a while and I'm wondering what the effect is.

I didn't notice any difference ...yet...but I'm sure having those wires exposed its only a matter of time before they either work loose or touch each other so this is more preventative maintanence for me

Eric - thanks for the advice. Took the valve cover off and it was a piece of cake to change the Hall Sender over. You were right too about the length of the lead being shorter. I can't think why they did this other than to save a fraction of a cent in cable cost? Granted that it is probably quite a generic part and probably used in VWs, Audis, etc but geeee all they had to do was add another centimetre of lead.....
ok rant over
thanks again
