TA Question
My 87 S TA makes a slight clucking noise while sitting in neutral with the clutch not depressed. It does not have a rubber center clutch. The noise is clearly in the rear. Other than that the TA work perfectly and makes no other noises while in use. I read somewhere about it being some bearings. Anybody know which ones in the TA?

You need to separate the TT torque tube from the TA transaxle to isolate the noise further.
With the car in neutral, clutch not depressed, the TT & TA are still both spinning with the engine rpm. Slide the rear TA & TT coupler to the rear and then do the test. If the noise is still there it is the TT (because the clutch is not depressed) if there is no noise it is the TA Noise in the TA could be normal wear on the shafts and bearings--repair or rebuild cost from $1500 & up. Bearings in the TT can be replaced. GL John

John you got it backwards. When you disconnect the transmission if the noise remains it is the torque tube. If the noise stops it is the transmission.

More:
If i am wrong and the 944S does not have the inspection plate do not continue. If it appears the TA is at fault or clucking, on the passenger side there is an inspection plate. To remove the inspection plate, A-Drain the TA fluid--Screen it with a white cheese cloth and check for silver flakes 1 Remove the CV joint on the passenger side next to the TA. 2 Remove a bolt inside the TA hub. 3 Slide the hub out (good time to replace a hub seal if needed) 4 Remove about 12 bolts around the inspection plate 5 Pull plate off and inspect the magnet for silver flakes. 6 Check as many gears for damage and unusual movement--- 7 Now put it back together because there is not an adjustment that a normal mechanic can do. BTW I forgot to mention, it only does this when thoroughly warmed up. I will be putting this on my long list of stuff to do.

What about if it is an automatic transmission and the noise occurs in both drive and neutral?

Upon further listening, the clucking noise seems to be coming up thru the shifter lever opening. My guess is the front bearing in the TT is on the way out. Is there anything else it could be? If it is the TT, is there a way to get grease in to the bearings?

If it's the Torque tube, you basically need to do a clutch job, and then replace the bearings.
