Noise from rear of engine

I have a 85 944, recently developed a noise from the rear cam tower, head or possibly even clutch area.

There is no noise at idle but when I rev it I get a knocking clicking type of noise for a second.

When cold, if i hold it around 3k rpms i can hear it too.

Its worse when cold but still not present at idle.

I pulled the camtower and found 2 soft lifters replaced those but the noise is still there. I have done a compression test and the #s are fine so I dont thinks it dropped a valve or anything like that.

The car pulls great and isnt missing or anything like that.

I am also not thinking rod bearing as usually they get worse the warmer it gets and i would hear it at idle and I have the opposite symptoms of that.

Am stumped to be honest - would appreciate any help/.

Could be a restricted oil passage, not getting enough oil to the rear followers.

Possible - guess the cam tower is gonna have to come off again. Its wierd - The noise is not constant for example if I get on the throttle I hear it but if I accelerate gently nothing.

Ha now I feel retarded.

Was an exhaust leak. The last two bolts on the manifold was loose as hell. Tightened them up and no ticking noise anymore.

Oh well a week of downtime waiting for lifters for nothing!
