What to do with engine?

I don't want to start a debate about swaps but, I'm in the process of yanking the 2.5 out to be replaced with a v8. What should I do with the old engine?
It probably needs a rebuild as it was sitting for years before we got a hold of it. We don't care to rebuild and sell it because it just isn't worth the time or money. So far we've taken off a bucnh of stuff(cam housing, valve cover, intake, fuel rail) sandblasted them and used a hi-temp paint and hi-temp clear coat and they look fantastic. Is it worth parting out any of the engine? I'd hate to see it end up scrap.

Do you own a boat? You could attach a line to it and keep you boat from drifting

Yes, we typically use the anchor but, I'll keep that in mind as an option

Don't toss the crank!

The race guys like to find crankshafts in good condition. Once they have been damaged by a #2 failure, they are expensive to re-use.
The crank in my race car has been cross drilled, so it should last indefinately, but I still have a spare or two laying around.
About everything else on a 944 engine is easily found for somewhat reasonable costs.

Hi Janet, Check out ebay for cost of parts listed. An 83 NA engine had forged rods well worth buying. I've seen cam towers complete $125 up. Selling an engine with no known condition, not running, who knows? Set up for years, will the engine turn over by hand smoothly? Color of Oil, Milkshake? Leaves a lot of questions about internal conditions. Every penny counts when swapping out to a V8, which is not for the faint of heart.

Best of luck,
Larry

I wouldn't sell it whole - you'd get more for the individual parts I should think.

GL with the swap, sounds like a fun project. =)

Thanks, I wanted to keep it original but, since I'm not the internal specialist, I got veto'd.

Why are you removing the engine? Because it doesn't run or for more power? If its the latter you should step away from the car now and really think about whether the V8 project will ever really get done. There are 944 enthusiasts on here and Rennlist who live and breath these cars, who have found the swap process daunting, difficult and costly. Doing it properly and having a reliable car with heat and power brakes isn't trivial. There is a good chance the I4 engine will come out and you'll never drive the car again.

Appreciate it for what it is and enjoy driving it.

If you really want to do this it's better to sell it as parts
The powder coated stuff will get you a few $
Also if it's an '83 or early '84 block it has forged rods +forged and crossdrilled crankshaft , pistons are different also but i'm not sure if they are forged or not ,total value of these is about $300
Those are the more important bits , all in all i think you could get about $600 out of it or possibly more depending on how many good parts still has on it

I know what I'm getting into I assure you. The motor doesnt run, it could be internal but, it's also electrical. We tried doing a tune up, replacing timing belt, reference sensors, DME relay but, after chucking $200 in it, nothing. I'm not concerned with more power but, weighing the options it just makes more sense to swap. My husband is a jet mechanic but, before that was an auto/motorcycle etc. mechanic. Swaps and rebuilds are something he's fluent in so we know whats involved. I appreciate the concern but the homework has been done and the know-how and resources are there.

I guess parting it out is the way to go.

A fully realized V8 conversion is a $10,000 proposition. Ask anyone who has done it. A known good used 944 engine is the way to go. Or, sell the 944 as is and get yourself a C4 'vette, Nissan 300ZX or some such.

Have you & your husband ever consider a 944/968 swap instead of a V8.Been done many time with success & there is a lot of plus to it (which I won't details here) versus a V8 swap.

I can't imagine the rest of the NA driveline will hold up with the hp and torque of a sb

It won't, that is unless you swap the suspension/brakes /tranny-diff ect ect for those of a 951/S2.The early 944 NA is simply not meant to take that kind of power, the same will go suspension /brakes ect ect for a 968/early NA swap. That is why 90% of the peoples doing V8 swap will start with an S2/951.The advantage of a 968 swap is that you keep the same hydraulic (brakes-clutch) system also you'll get a lot better gas mileage & I'm sure the car will be more drivable on a day to day basis.Unless you want 400 HP to play around with which I don't see no use for. The 968 motor as plenty of torque and enough power to scare you silly if you want to drive it to it's limit in an early NA.Mind you I'm not for or against V8 swap but you hear so much horror stories about them that one start do wonder, yes there is successful one being done but they not cheap as peoples think.Btw don't matter what you swap in a 944 NA it will cost you unless like mention dropping another 2.5 8v/2.7 8v & keeping things as OEM as possible.
