Relay diagram wrong..? Where is window washer relay?
So according to the relay diagram for the early cars, relay #4 is supposed to be the windshield washer relay. Relay number 4 is in fact the door chime. So does anyone know which relay is actually for the windshield washer? Mine are not working, and there is no power at the sprayer motor.
Pelican Parts: 944 Early Fuse and Relay Layout The picture on there shows what i assume is a late model car. There is no relay 5, so im not getting those confused. i have followed the list at the bottom and all relays are accounted for, except number 4, which is the door chime. there is also no fuse for the sprayers. i cant imagine a direct circuit with nothing in between... in the 944online store the diagram shows it to be relay 4 as the washers, relay 5 is chime. theres just a gap where relay 5 would go. it seems my relay 5 is in the relay 4 spot, and relay 4 is gone.... http://www.944online.com/cgi-bin/ASI_Store.cgi?Product+diakey_10002+9441+EngineElec trical-9441

That first diagram seems to match up exactly with my 83 944, in fact it's the same one from the owner's manual (mine was sold with the car) and I used that diagram to troubleshoot some relays before correctly.

anyone have any idea what i should do next? theres no plug for the washer relay. its just not there. and there are a few small single wire plugs here and there, but they dont look like they would go together at all. may have to hardwire my own setup..

If hardwire use an inline fuse just so you don't cause an electrical fire.

First check for voltage at the motor with the switch depressed. If there is voltage, then the motor or the motor ground is likely bad. If no voltage it could be a fuse or a bad switch. Try following the wire back from the washer. If it disappears somewhere use the wire color code to help deduce where it leads. If you think you have found what relay it leads to use an ohm meter to check the continuity back to the motor. If the continuity is good on this part of the circuit, then maybe the problem is a fuse or supply voltage, or the switch side of the relay circuit. Also don't forget to check the ground on the motor side.
Be cautious, as I don't think it is worth tearing apart the wiring harness if this is your only problem. |

as i said, theres no power at the motor. the wires do disappear, and there is no relay or place for the relay at all. its going to have to be bare wires somewhere, but i dont even see those.
is there a wiring diagram for the early 944s on here?

If it is the same as the 924 the washer pump is wired straight to the switch and there is no relay. And it is a green/red wire.
Look at current flow diagram part IV... And to tell you the truth it doesn't look like there is a relay involved in the wipers at all except for the intermittent control. This is how I recall a late 944 is setup too. |

The relay may have something to do with the intermittent control. If the relay is removed the wipers still work, they just don't park properly. (on a late 944)

BTW once you get the washer motor working you will probably have a fair number of issues to deal with to get the system fully working. things such as gummed up lines, nozzels, check valves, screens, dirty resovoir, etc.
If you are determined, start with cleaning out the resevoir with dish soap so when you add fluid the residue/gunk in the resevior doesn't get loosened and clog the motor, check valves, screens, nozzels, etc. Last edited by djnolan; 02-02-2013 at 04:40 AM.. |

I had stumbled across this thread some time ago, and while looking through the WSM for something else I happened across an interesting note. Mystery solved.
