my n/a sounds way better anyway! =/

flash968 02-20-2013 04:58 PM

i doubt it is the speakers. i am running through a pair of studio monitors (audio engineer).

the system on that youtube clip was about 5 systems ago. that one was a complete fail, and was horrible when it was cold (like at the time of that recording).

i am very picky about exhaust note indeed. i have been trying one thing after another to find the right sound, without losing torque. it has been harder on this car than any other i have every had. i've had systems in the car for less than an hour before i yanked them back out and did something else. i am currently on my 13th system in this car. when i supercharged the car, i got to start all over again.

the clip sounds tinny to me. there is a metallic component to it. mostly it just sounds farty or like a kazoo though. but then i don't like high pitched exhaust notes either. i like the low rumbly ones. a 302 is probably my favorite. i absolutely hate the sound of these kid's cars with the big coffee can mufflers. the wrx and such just sound like junk to me.

i'm glad you're happy with what you have. it would make me crazy. exhaust note is extremely subjective though. you're the one driving it. only you have to like it.

seven944 02-20-2013 05:06 PM

Maybe it is the speakers, I didn't think of that

seven944 02-20-2013 05:08 PM

You're not hearing the exhaust then , because it sounds deep. Post a vid of your 968, I'd like to hear it

seven944 02-20-2013 06:15 PM

Dooooood, what do you think of the exhaust?

diamondzz 02-20-2013 06:22 PM

sounds like my exhaust, low, raspy, more active at higher rpms but never high pitched

seven944 02-20-2013 07:18 PM

Holy snot diamonds! That thing sounds great! 3inch!?

diamondzz 02-20-2013 07:30 PM

3.5 lol i have been criticized plenty about how "uhhh it creates too little back pressure" and so on but i have a 944 n/a that goes 0-60 in low 7 seconds so i think my mods are doing something right...also the catalytic has been gutted thats why i think our exhaust setup sounds similar...btw i love the way mine sounds and i get heads turning from all directions, pussy comes crawling to my car...ok maybe not

Lmao how's the low end? Also, I don't have a cat at all, I have a glass pack

seven944 02-20-2013 07:39 PM

My car gets all the poon because I'm in it, and it looks cool. Win!

diamondzz 02-20-2013 07:58 PM

not too great but i can take off in 3rd and go 40-60 mph in 5th, as long as you keep it above 900 rpm it will pull forward

Gawernator 02-20-2013 09:10 PM

I'll keep my low-end torque with the OEM muffler and setup, maybe will go to Bursch headers and a straight pipe though.

seven944 02-20-2013 10:01 PM

Msds header going on soon, the struggle begins again! Haha

i am hearing the exhaust just fine. i think it sounds farty. this is typical of a 4 cylinder naturally aspirated car when you open up the exhaust. it doesn't really matter what i think though.

i fought with this for 9 years on the blue car. it wasn't until i supercharged it that the gaps between the pulses got filled in and smoothed out. then came the process of finding a muffler that could flow what i was putting out. i had to change to mandrel bent tubing because the press bends were creating turbulence. it got much better. i messed with 3" for a minute, but lost 20 lb/ft of torque. i went back to 2.5". as i said, it isn't perfect, and i'd like it to be 2 or 3db lower overall, but it's the best i've heard yet.

i'll try to get a recording soon.

seven944 02-21-2013 07:40 AM

Anyway, if anyone likes mine and wants to skip the trial and error, ill show / post the entire system parts and part numbers if I can

Lindsey Racing told me unless I had close gears and kept the RPM high, going bigger than 2.5" was a bad idea from their experience.

I have a MSDS header, Lindsey 2.5" with straight pipe, Borla Muffler. Definitely not to your taste I'd say, took me some time getting used to it. Totally ruins the stealth of the car to. No noticeable loss in bottom end at all, and a HUGE difference from my stock setup with clogged cat once I started going over 3,500RPM.

I need to hunt that car for vacuum leaks, runs really rich. I replaced the O2 sensor when I did the exhaust, so I doubt that is the issue. I will also want to check the TPS and Air Flow sensors.

My '86, is as far as I know, stock and original from header to tail pipe. The motor is really strong. I'd like it to be moderately louder, but not as loud as my Lindsey setup, I'm not sure where/what to change. I'll probably leave as be for a few years.

flash968 02-21-2013 11:57 AM

they are right. even with the amount of power i am putting out (nearly 375hp and 300 lb/ft), i can't run 3" without losing torque.

us RoW guys with no cats as stock don't suffer from lack of torque from the lack of it if thats what you're worried about. Otherwise if we did, i would put a cat on my car! SmileWavy (and not the neighbours cat).

if it was easier to get them down here I would like a dansk exhaust. this one is for a 924 turbo but you can get my jist.
