Can 924/944 Transaxles be run upside down?
I am curious if the 924/944 Transaxles ever have been or could be run upside down, similar to some of the 911/930 stuff?

Yes, but you may have problems sealing the transaxle so that it doesn't leak.

Yeah, I would assume vents might need to be re-routed/relocated, but wondering about oiling, etc.

Should be no problem... there is no oil pump, just a bath of oil.

Potential problems that I can think of are as said above, sealing, venting and shift linkage. Also you would have to flip the diff

And the fill/drain plugs, but the gearset/diff is designed to sit in a specific depth of oil bath so the fill level would have to be re assessed anyway, of course.

Thanks - good points all. Depth of oil bath when right and upside down is probably pretty important. I was wondering about the mainshaft, too, running submerged vs. splash lubricated? I am not a trans guy so don't know if this matters.
Awesome point, and really, the source of my question. I want to be able to run this trans in a rear-engined application, so hoping this will be a good solution to finding a strong, available, and ratio-correct trans. Flipping it will allow 5 forward gears when rear engined and flipped over. We'll see....

How would you flip the diff in this type of box?

My understanding is you can not flip the diff in this type of box, hence my inquiring to flipping the whole transaxle, to get the same result, albeit with different height for CV flanges and other issues, but, a possible solution.
