chunks of rust

Driving down the interstate and noticed a few chunks of rust in the passenger floor board. I'm not going to be home until tomorrow or really able to get under the dash to take a closer look . Just looking for a few ideas of where it may be becoming from other than firewall.

It actually looks more like rat food. The kind mikepellegrini has in the engine compartment...

Totally rusted out battery tray and inner fender/firewall skirts?

From under the hood, the battery tray looks good, but has been fixed at some point. So no ruse from the the tray under the hood. It may be coming from the underside of the tray however it feels solid from above. I'm thinking its from around the ac or a heater line running through the fire wall. Biggest chunk was 1/2" x 1/4" and thicker than i'd like. I'm going to hope its just a small area and looking for a temporary fix(something to kill live rust and seal the remaining exposed bare metal. Inner fender looks good. This is def rust chunks. As much as i've been through this car there has never been any signs of rodent activity. The investigation is on!

looks like a groundhog - how in the world did it get in there?? The one living under our deck just came out of hibernation today.

My rat was in the airbox. At least I didn't have a groundhog/beaver/larger rodent under my master cylinder...
