Different looking 944s
Let say that I got inspired by ditch68,sat back (remember I'm retire and it's still winter up here) so decided to start this thread. Most of use here are purist which like their cars as they are including me.But what about peoples which would like a different look but without loosing the basic line of the 944s.I'm sure there are many on this forum. What will be looking for, are cars that hasn't been extremely modified.Hope you guys jump on the bandwagon and send some pics. That will give use an idea of people esthetic's taste.I'm starting with five of them.Positive & negative comment will be both appreciated.
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Those who wishes to for starting this thread don't be shy it's still very cold up here and I need to warm up.

In my design opinion, a lot of those modifications make the car look too heavy. Big rockers, big bumpers, all tend to 'weigh' the car down. Not my cup of tea, but surely someone's.
I'm not a purist. However, most times the factory does a better job than someone else claiming to be a car artiste'. The overall expression and intent of car is important. Some of these try to make the lines so smooth and they get lost. The shoulders, beltline and 'chin' are some of the most prominent features on this car. Panel gaps too, even. Good car designers take time designing where the panel gaps go so that they complement the lines of the car. The 968 is a good example of this. Think of a kid's coloring book - the panel gaps define the car sometimes, not the outline. Drift - are those Simmons wheels on your car? Last edited by FrenchToast; 03-18-2013 at 09:39 PM.. |

I am a purist in a way, I don't like all the other wheels etc. It may just be me but the wheels such as turbo twist, which have the twist all going the same way such as twist forward on one side and twist rearward the other. Do you know what I am trying to say? I hate that look and not just our cars but any vehicle in general. I see it almost every day at work. Why spend a lot of money on wheels that don't flow the same both sides. Just a little vent cause it's pouring out now. But I do like those pictures above to some amount however I would never do that. Of course it's my opinion and we all know what that means

Very good comments of both of you guys, agree with you Allan that the rigth wheels on a car can make the difference in the car look. Now let's a look at some car with very minor changes from the OEM one (except) for the 944S2.
![]() From Cab to Spider. 924S with side markers remove, different wheels & a somewhat stunning paint job. Early 928 rear wide body with different front clip mirrors & wheels. 968 Coupe with different front clip & wheels.

okay Ernie, I am not a fan of after market wheels but those do look awesome, I just would never do it. Maybe it's just the twist type wheels that rub me wrong.

Great thread! I like different, but my take is if it is going to be modded visually, I prefer in the "race car" direction.
Despite my obvious penchant for that look, I do hope to someday (soon) own a 100% bone stock early N/A car to just make beautiful and mechanically as perfect as possible to go with my modded out monster. I really wish I saw more 968s "in the wild", I think I have only seen 2 in the last year or so. These hybrid types are good looking cars, as is the 968. Jeff

I actually like the spider conversion very much. It make the car appear more like an exotic (F-50ish). That deep blue hue is quite impressive.

![]() ![]() And Ernie don't be so modest your early 944 was modded just enough, this picture is what started me down the path of moddes and haven't looked back (the wallet is not so happy) but you only live once.

These are the same car. The second picture is what he had done to the car after he put it through a fence at an autocross. The car may as well be an old Camaro, too, given what's under the metal.

When I bougth my 968 there was two aesthetic features I didn't really care for on it,first was the two front rubber bumperettes similar to what they have on ROW 944 front bumper. And secondly the head ligths washer exclusive to the CDN 968s.So I decided to get rid of both. The bumperettes was easy,I just replace the turn signals by a pair of Euro signals which are longer. The headligths washer was another story, and here I had the choice of removing them & using a plastic plug to hide the hole or remove the front clip & plug the holes to smooth finish & respray I choose the second option & I'm happy with it.
