Home made vent panel/intercooler ducting changes

Well, I know it won't fit some people's tastes, but I thought I'd share anyway. Please keep the flames to a minimum.

I modded the factory ducting to open up the intercooler to receive cold air from the nose panel and also the upper grille vent split over and under the bumper.

I have better airflow over the intercooler, and the engine runs just as cool as before (important in AZ in a couple months...)

Also plan on adding a larger oil cooler to that effect.

Some might not like the "ghetto" hole drilling in my nose panel, but I'd rather spend the couple hundred bucks they get for fiberglass vented nose panels for other things on the car.

I plan to add 1/8" hardware cloth (steel screen) behind the holes and painted white to match, they won't stand out as much after that.

I also will sand and repaint the nose panel entirely to clean things up, but I am in no hurry. It definitely is not a show car, it is moving closer and closer to being a pure track car as time goes on.

Cost including hardware cloth: $3.50 plus the paint to repaint the panel eventually.

Jeff

We did that on the bumper of my car for a bit extra venting to the fmic...but I have hood vents. Even then I don't consider the hood venting enough and am going to be making some more very significant changes to the location / angle of the Intercooler and radiator. We will be purpose ducting through another vent in the hood centrally located sort of like the 968rs turbo. Actually like this Orange race 924.

The problem that you have by venting in the nose panel is that it's in a high pressure area and will potentially create a negative zone for what you're trying to achieve. Because the air that's hitting your newly vented nose panel doesn't have anywhere to go, it can stall or even push backwards. This could cause potential problems. That's why you see racecars with a central vent up front on their hoods. You can buy a generic vent like in the 3rd pic. Search for Carbon trix. By the sounds of it your car is fast becoming a full track rat so I would look to do something like this for sure.
Good luck.

Couple more pics. See how the ducting on the Orange car allows the air to escape. Same on the white car with that generic vent.

I like how the five are larger, and the outside ones get smaller. Flows nicely with the contours of the nose.

Nice job! Touch up any exposed metal from cutting.

Take care,

Patrick, I am already planning for that. I intend to do a 924 GTR scoop, and then a vented area aft of all that, something simple and homemade, if I can come up with something acceptably decent looking. Thanks for the great ideas. How is the post crash rebuild coming along on the black car? I love that car....

Thanks, toast! I wanted it to be interesting and unique (and not look like a bunch of hole saw assaults. There are actually 3 hole sizes all laid out evenly.

Off to install my Lindsey Racing braided fuel line set, AOS seals, and some other leak fixes.

I would have been installing my Lindsey billet trans mount if they had sent the correct part (I ordered a late mount, and got the 2 piece early set....grumble. Guess that will have to wait until next weekend.

And where are all of these cars getting GTR headlight conversions with 951 front ends? I thought nobody made them for the 951 nosepanels?

Pretty sure they're out there. Deutsch-9, GT-Racing, etc. 333pg333 - Did you make your own? A kit?

I've heard nobody's kits are really plug-and-play, and you could be better off making your own considering the fab work needed to make them look good.

The only thing I don't like about the pop up lights? Always forget to wash the headlights when washing the car!

Take care,

My GTR headlights are indeed from Deutsch 9. A bit fiddly but do look good imho when installed.

I'm actually going to remove the opening in my nose panel altogether and have the opening in the bumper only which will be custom ducted through to the hood. We will also move the IC and radiator onto a 45 degree +/- angle for better flow and less drag.

Ha ha! Good guess, Ernie. But I was actually doing something else with a hole saw, and looked over at the car....then back at the hole saw...back at the car...and a little light flickered on.

I do recall seeing a "Gulf Blue" racing livery car with a similar setup somewhere on the interweb.

That Brumos car looks great I didn't know they ever ran 951s.

Thanks for the headlight tip. I really want a set of those.

Eventually I'm going to install one of those GTR front ends from Lindsey, eliminating most of this stuff in the process.

Here is the image I recall seeing.

Jeff

Mine has more frontal opening and this car seems to have a huge blockage in the critical center for the sake of decals.

I think the Horsepower gained from the decal offsets the negative of having no hole there.

I saw a car with one of these in person, looks like crap, has a Dodge truck style too it. I have also seen the 53 car pictures, it actually has a pretty big intercooler, yet because it is mounted lower, doesn't screw up the lines of the 951 and make it look like a big acne blotch, like the other header pane .]

I am seriously conteplating dropping the big cash for the Lindset GTR bumper - I smahed my splitter on a parking bump a half hour ago.

At the UPS store returning the solid motor mounts they sent me instead of the solid trans mount I ordered! LOL

Anyone have pics of that (the orange car on the Lindsey website)

Hardware Cloth Mesh

What size hardware cloth are you going with when you put it behind the holes to be painted white? I would be careful with that, because those are such small holes, I would probably go with a fine woven wire cloth (try here: Custom Wire Cloth - Belleville Wire Cloth Co - Cedar Grove, NJ ) of some sort of stainless steel so it will last the test of time, but will not have opening sizes so large that they are basically invisible because they get so lost within the holes.

Thanks.

I actually kinda blew off the hardware cloth and just have the holes there. I'll probably just leave them open like they are. I don't mind how they look without it as time goes on.

I doubt I'll be sucking any birds or anything in there!
