Matching numbers for engine and trans?
This might be a silly questions, but does the 944's have matching numbers for trans and engine?
I will have a spare S engine that I've been thinking about doing a complete rebuild on. tear apart everything, replace anything needed and re-plate all zinc plated parts, and then eventually install in my running S. But will this then not be a matching numbers engine or they don't have that anyway? Thanks

The engine is given a sequential production number. It doesn't really correlate to your vin in any way but it is technically the original engine. Really the only way to know if it is the original engine is to get a Certificate of Authenticity (CoA) done on the car. If the replacement engine has the same year code then nobody who's not willing to shell out 100 bucks for a CoA is going to know the difference. I don't think an engine replacement would devalue anything but the nicest cars out there (original paint, <50k miles, perfect records, the kind of 944's going up in value) and having a strong leak free motor is certainly worth more.
As for the transmission, they don't even have serial numbers. I guess Audi figured it didn't really matter so they just stamped the type and date of manufacture on it. |

But a CoA would show the production number?
