944 Squealling noise
I have a 1988 Porsche 944. I had the clutch replaced 6 months ago, but now have a squealling noise, the increases as RPMs increase. In gear and out of gear. It seeems to be getting worse. is is clutch release bearing going out or worse? Any ideas?

Thanks Matt.
That all checks out. it sounds like a gear whining or a bearing squeal. It increases with RPM even when in neutral. I spoke to my mechanic on the phone, and asked if he thought it was the clutch release bearing and he siad he thought not. He thinks it may be in the transmission ( manual 5 speed). I am concerned that it is going to require an overhaul which I am not prepared to do. I have put over $5,000 in this car this year making a grand investment of $14,000. The car is beautiful, but not worth another potential $2,000 to me. What do you think? |

One thought on lordgrommit's post. Do you usually leave the air on? Sometimes the compressor makes a very strange noise when its about worn out. Mine did it and really scared me before I realized that the car did not make the noise if I started it with the air off. Once I turned the air on and drove, it would make the noise. Better a compressor than a transmission.

Thanks,
It is definitely not the air conditioner. I had that problem last year and had that fixed. it would squeal miserably if on when starting the car. I had all belts and hoses replaced and that stopped. This noise is definitely drive train related. |
