944 N/A 2.7 race car engine tuning options
Hi all!
I have a 944 2.7 racing car which I currently race in the Classic Sports Car Club in the UK. I'm looking to eek out some more performance from the engine but am a bit confused as to my options. The engine is completely standard, the ECU has a chip I believe but other than that it's stock. I've made several enquiries in the UK but I'm struggling to find anyone with much experience of these engine so advise is vague at best. I believe I can have the cam reprofiled, the head skimmed and the valves overhauled relatively easily but I have no idea what real term gains will be had by doing this? The more extreme option would be the above plus boring the block, getting performance pistons, rods etc and having the whole thing balanced but I'm struggling to find suppliers for the components and again even if I could I'm unsure what the real term performance gains will be. After any work is complete I'm assuming the ECU will need to be remapped. Can the Motronic ECU be remapped or would I need an alternative ECU? I'm particularly keen to see what can be achieved with the 2.7 engine. I realise an S2 engine swap would be a more economical option if this was a road car but as it's a racing car that is pretty well dialled in I'd prefer to keep the original engine (I also have to run the original engine with my model of car under the club rules). Any advice would be greatly appreciated. |
