dumb front shock question

from what I have read, struts cannot be rebuilt for the 1987 NA 944.

and it appears that I should be looking at the Boge/Sachs section of the Pelican Parts catalog.

if so it looks like the only option are the 944-343-031-17 and 944-343-032-17-OEM

Porsche 924S/944/968 Suspension - Page 2

which are, respectively, left and right, 944/944S (1987-88). it says "On the later cars, you need to replace the entire insert in order to replace the shock."

so what does that mean - when the two items I specified above are in-hand, I put the old spring on them, and that's it? are there any other doo-dads that need to go on there, like dust boots, etc?

do I have that right? I haven't figured out if my car is M-whatever yet.

You have two choices, fit new original Boge/Sachs struts or cut the ones you have and fit Koni inserts.

Your struts are sealed and the inserts are not replaceable but Koni has a kit that allows you to cut your old strut open and fit their inserts. Otherwise you replace the whole strut complete.

If you buy the complete strut you only have to take everything off your old strut and put it on the new strut (springs, dust-caps, top mounts, etc). You might want to get new dust caps and bump stops while you have everything apart as your old ones are likely toast. You will need a spring compressor and an air gun to complete this task, or take it to your local friendly autoparts store to do it for you.

If you cut open your existing struts and fit the Koni inserts the task is a little more complicated but well documented, or you can send your old struts in and get Paragon to do the job for you: Paragon Koni Insert Service You still use your existing springs and everything else using this method.

First check that you don't have the M474 option before you order anything.

Hope that helps, GL
