86 944 speed cross reference sensor bolt?

Changing out my reference sensor and I lost the bolt that holds it in. I know the head is a 10mm but what size bolt is it? Can I get a match at a local hardware store?

It's special

Hopefully it didn't fall down the hole in the bell housing?

uvachief 10-08-2013 01:28 AM

I've taken a magnet all over the engine and under the car. I cannot find the bolt. Where exactly is the bell housing? Can you post a picture?

There are a few pulse senders, so which one were you changing? If it wasn't one of the senders mounted on the bell housing (down behind the engine, between the oil fill tube and the firewall), then you don't need to worry about it as much.

I replaced the mark reference sensor. There are 2 of them. One was frayed.

And those sensors are, IIRC, mounted right through/into the bell housing, where dropping the bolt through the hole would basically put it right into the clutch/flywheel area. Can you look through the clutch inspection hole and/or probe around with a magnet in there and find it?

when I was removing the bolt from the mark reference sensor, I pulled it straight up the mark reference sensor was still there. I don't see how it could have fallen through the mark reference sensor so it's lying is somewhere around the damn thing I'll get a scope with a camera and look at that way. In my infinite wisdom I did try to start it up and a it would briefly catch for a second but wouldn't stay. I did notice the RPM's reading about 7,000 when I turned the key I probably tried it 3 or 4 times and gave up. sorry if this makes no sense I'm talking to my phone. I will clean it up later

I use a flexable springlike wand with a bullet shaped magnet on the end to search.

In front-just forward of the reference sensor bracket-there is a hidden pocket on top of the engine under the wires where a bolt or nut (like a nut from the negative ground or reference sensor bolt ) can drop into the crevice and not fall to the ground.

The only way to feel around for the fallen bolt/nut is with a flashlight and wand.

UVACHIEF:

If you cannot find the bolt, let me know.

I am sure I have a couple extra in my inventory I could send you one.

Here is what I am looking at. Where in hades did it fall? Been all over it with a magnet and camera.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1381269084.jpg

Flexible magnetic pick up tool, with light... HarborFreight.com.

Is there any room on *top* of the bell housing? Some guys have lost bolts and nuts and found them sitting on top of the bell housing, just inside the firewall.

John_AZ 10-08-2013 02:33 PM

IF it fell in the TDC hole, pull the starter and hope it drops to the bottom of the bell housing.

Would you believe it was the dang dme relay causing my starting issue? Never found the bolt.

uvachief 10-08-2013 05:07 PM

I let it run for about 20 minutes. No noise or grinding. I'll drive it around the block and listen for metal running into a fan. Assuming it has settled to the bottom, is it safe to drive or do I need to open it up? Isn't there an access panel?

tamathumper 10-09-2013 02:21 AM

If it's rattling around the bottom of the bell housing, I wonder if it might get jammed into the starter and break teeth off your flywheel - $$$. I'd at least remove the clutch inspection hole plug and the starter and make really sure it's not in there.

uvachief 10-09-2013 02:27 AM

Fiddle flarn fiddle! No access panel hunh? Why is that hole there on the first place? Release heat? They could have vented it toward the sides.

My best guess is that is exactly where it fell. I took the camera and a small point magnet down there. Never saw it and I haven't driven it other than to move it back 3 feet and forward 3 feet looking for the bolt on the ground. Definitely not on the ground. When loosening the reference sensor from the driver's side, I would have thought the magnetic socket would have held it. Didn't though. But, I would have thought it would have dropped on the other side away from that hole though.
