Question Another award winning stupid question. CV joint. Pics

No use even putting this back together, is there? Is this bad enough to cause my thunking and have a slight growl when I am moving? Don't have a clue what the other side looks like yet. I can only imagine. The bearings are blue and the grooves are deeper than they look. I am sure they could be much worse though. There wasn't a lot of play in it before I took it apart, but some. This is the side that bolts to the transaxle, the wheel side is a lot tighter. I saw this and stopped there. It was full of nasty grease, it wasn't dry.
Thanks!

(Like I posted at the forbidden board):
Happened to me too, these cars don't have very strong axles...

I'd definately go with the Porsche part. Sometimes parts really are interchangable, but just because something bolts up doesn't mean it's the same part. Very good example is the front control arms of early 944s, do NOT go non Porsche on those, ditto for the bushings...

WHOA!!!!

Dude! Did your bearing bind and that made your axle snap? WoW! I was thinking about packing the he!! out of them till I could afford new ones, but not now! The bad thing is, I don't yet know what the pass. side looks like and sitting in the car it kinda sounds like that is the side the noise is coming from, but it really is hard to tell.
Thanks all for the replies! As usual, y'all are a wealth of info!

No, I was just doing some 0-60 tests to get a baseline before I did some more things to the car. Mine has 180k miles, and it sure did look like it had the original axles on it.

If you want to save some money, rotate and re-use. I'd still suggest replacing them though (or you could wait until they break if you're really cheap).

your cheapest options:

  1. Kragen can order them for far cheaper than you can get them anywhere else, and you can get:
the axle with two bearings on it, just the bearings, just the boot, or combo of all the above

  2. Junkyard. I got an axle and two repackable bearings for $50

Those guys you have are shot, and odds are the Pass. side is likewise. They don't have to be dry to be damaged, they have to be PACKED full of grease, that prevents them from wearing a clean spot and wearing out.

Thumbs up

Am I glad to hear you say that!!! Because... I won this on ebay earlier. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1852566178
The person only has 60 feedback, but no neutrals or negatives and I looked through his feedback and people have bought them before and seem happy with them. There is another one he has that I am going to try to get also if he will combine shipping. He offers a 30 day guarantee 100% refund less s&h. Worth a shot. Might be a waste of $100 bucks when it is all said and done. If they work out, I will still probably end up rebuilding the old ones and have them ready. I might be getting into what I already have but I will take one chance. If they aren't any good I will try to get my money back and just be out shipping.
What is Kragen? Do you have a link?

Kragen is just a discount chain like Autozone or Pepboys. $35? Hell uva deal! even with shipping, yer ahead of the game. If they're comming prepacked, I'd still get some grease and throw extra in, just for the Halibut. There's supposed to be a gasket that goes in there, but I don't have one and it seems to be alright*. they also recoment you replace the bolts, but I bought a set and replace 2 on each end* (bolts do stretch when you torque em, of course) From what I've seen from the pictures, yours are ready for the scrap pile (keep the axles of course) out of all 4 joints, I was able to salvage one.

Keep one of the worst for a paper weight. I keep a bent valve on my desk as a reminder on belt changes. I only keep one because there is no room for the other 12. Broke the belts twice.

I found that the CV balls were almost to big for a slingshot. But used them anyway.

What camera did you use for the pictures?

I got the Minolta Dimage 5 because I have always used Minolta Maxxum 35mm. and wanted to stick with Minolta (Well, I can't afford Nikon ) The Minolta Dimage 7I is the one to get, but I couldn't afford that either. I got a kick a$$ deal on this one on Ebay. $400 with a 256CF card and all kinds of extra goodies. The dude I got it from sent his receipt with it and he just paid $800 in Dec. 01 and the receipt didn't have all the stuff he sent with it. I Metal Detect as a hobby and this does good macro shots on coins. Speaking of which, not that you guys probably care, I found one of my goal coins for the year tonight!(we make goals each new years what coins we want to find for the year, types of coins we have never found before personally) I found an 1858 Seated half dollar. I was thrilled! Ain't worth much, but they are very rarely found. Back then, 50¢ was a lot of money and if someone lost something that big, they usually looked till they found it. I also found an 1888s Seated Dime tonight along with a bunch of Indian heads and wheat cents and a 17 merc dime. Sorry, I am still hyped about the half!

Yeap! That's Todwic's Better Half - has a nice smile too!!! Met them both.

Did you notice that there are two keyboards on 1.2gee's desk?

I have two to three computaturs running at the same time. The video, audio processing I've been doing can bring an Athlon XP to it's knees! I use a four computer switch box. Soon to have the 21" Viewsonic back from repair and pass on the 19" to the kid.

Have to say I can clean my desk to look almost as uncluttered but it takes just a day or so to hardly see the wood top.

Ric, Where are you detecting at to find such treasures??

What else have you found?

I hunt "hunted out" parks mostly. The key is my detector. It is a Minelab Explorer made in Austrailia. It goes deeper than any detector made. Minelab makes military mine detection equipment and are always developing new technologies. They of course make consumer detectors which is what this one is. This detector transmits 28 frequencies simultaneously which they have the patent on. All other detectors only transmit 1 or 2. This also makes it work in heavy iron trash with out masking the coins with iron. Long story short, it rocks! You could say they are the Porsche of the detecting world. Some still will like ford better. I have compared targets with almost every top of the line detector made and they all can't hear the coins this one will.
The half is really wore and isn't worth but maybe $10 or $15 tops but they are rare to find. I was so happy you wouldn't believe it if I told you. It really is a thrill to dig a 100+ year old coin out of the ground. You wonder who lost it and how. Plus it is peaceful for the most part, put the headphones on and tune out the world. If you didn't know, silver comes out of the ground just like new most of the time. It does not tarnish like silver does in air. These were only rinsed in water to get the dirt off.
I have several coins I have found worth $600+ each, but they were not as thrilling to find as this one.

I always upgraded the surgical rubber on mine to the next largest size and used cheap bags of marbles from the 99 cents stores. Saved the large steel for those special targets!
