Question Click click from steering

Here's a stumper:
I don't have power steering.

When I am applying brakes and turning the front wheels (eg. when parking) there is a quiet "click click" that sounds like it is from the steering column (front of driver) and that is NOT coordinated with wheel rotation; also, this is only an intermittent phenomenon.

I can't figure it out.
I checked the steering linkages (2) in front of the fire wall. They seem great; very very little play when pushed, but solidly connected.

Here's another weird thing that may or may not have anything to with the price of cheese:
When the clutch pedal is in (shifting) and I apply the brake, there is a different click (only one, never two), but still a sound I would call a click. This click sounds like it comes from the midsection of the car, almost right under my seat.

To rule out the obvious, it's not the rails on the seat (checked it). I looked up to that diaphragm thing that the brake pushes into (inside the car) and it looked moist: greese maybe? But otherwise, the clutch and brake assemblies inside the car look great.

The previous owner replaced the master cylinder by himself, and it seems he was a total idiot (from other repairs I've looked at that he did).

What do you guys think?

Check your control arms or have them checked. My front right side makes noise (kind of like a click, but loud enough to be apparent) when that side suspension becomes under load from turning. I haven't verified this with my mechanic yet, but I'm pretty sure that's what it is.

I know this because my left side needed replacement some time back. If this is your problem, consider replacing both at the same time, and/or upgrading to some steel ones (Porsche OE units are aluminum)--the racers replace them with steel ones because the amuminum OE units would fail at high speed sweepers--very bad--but I don't think it's a problem unless you're really loading the suspension like racers do with their slicks and race suspensions.

Okay:
I took both off and re-installed carefully a couple of months ago, while changing the motor mounts.
The rubber looked to be in great condition then, and the parts are attached with specified torque, so I'd like to think it's not the A-Arms.

Any more ideas?
Can anyone tell me if this could be a safety problem (as I wrote: I don't THINK it is; at speeds > 5mph, it doesn't ever happen)?
