Making an interior color code list, please help

Hi everyone. There doesn't seem to be a list of interior color codes with the name of the color, the code, the year of the car and pictures. So, I'm going to make one. Once I get all the info I will post it on my website and on the forum too, so others can easily find the info.

If you want to help me out, please PM, respond or email (kyle@only944.com) me as much info as you can about your car. Here is what I'm looking for.

Year of car
Model of car (NA, turbo, S, S2)
Interior color name (linen, light grey, can can, etc.)
Color code (LQ, 8WC, etc.)
Picture of your interior

Thanks for your help

Good idea, thanks for doing this. I cannot contribute to interiors however I have every year Porsche exterior color sheets and codes for every 924/44/68 MY. I'd have to take some time to scan them if anyone is interested, here is a poor phone pic of one sheet for MY86 models and codes for 83-85 on the back.

Thanks, that's pretty cool. It seems like the exterior color codes are much easier to find, but there is very little info in the interior codes, which is why I want to make a list. My goal is to make a list like that, but of interior codes.

Here is some more info that I forgot to add.

For those that don't know where the color code is. It's on a sticker in the hatch area, under the carpet by the spare tire.

This picture shows the interior color code as "LQ". LQ is light grey

One more thing. The PET does not have these codes. The PET has part number color codes, which are different than the color code used on the car. One of the goals of making this list is to bridge the gap between the color codes in the car, and the color name, and the part number color codes.

1987 944S - code XP - Light Grey (but it sure looks like light tan)

1986 944 turbo - code VN - black

(obviously it has aftermarket seats.. I'm sure someone else can provide a better picture of a black interior)

Hey, Kyle. Here's a link from Clarks Garage that covers interior codes: http://www.clarks-garage.com/pdf-manual/body-27.pdf.

My car: '87 944 N/A with inter code LQ. Delivery sheet says, "grey leather and vinyl".

Are there different codes for the material used?

Can't help you on actual codes - sorry.

J968 can probably give you a comprehensive list for the 968 series.

I'm pretty sure all these were available through different years on the 944, not sure if each one has it's own code though:

Black
Beige/black
Linen/black
Linen/marine
White/black (rare)
White/maroon (very rare)
Marine
Maroon
Classic Gray (rare)
Brown
Can-Can/black
Cobalt (may have been RoW only)

Clarification of "rare" when used above. Can-can is relatively common compared to white/black, white/maroon, and Classic Gray.

Then of course there are the materials: script cloth/vinyl, Plaid cloth/vinyl, striped cloth/vinyl, cloth/vinyl, leather/vinyl, full leather. With the 924 you could also get Tweed or Pascha.

Thanks for the help guys, we need to keep the info coming to fill out this list.

Mytrplseven. Thanks for the clarks-garage link. I don't know how I missed that. But, it's still the same problem. Those codes don't match what is in the cars. Me and you both have the exact same car, 87 na black and light grey, with color codes "LQ". But, clarks-garage list says that light grey is color code "2FP". I've never seen that code before, either on a car or in the PET. So that list isn't really good for much. I don't know where those codes came from, or what they match up to.

Please guys, keep the info coming.

Hi,

I'm working on a new PCA 968 register website (with another 968 owner) which will have a lot of great production data on all things 968 including the interior. Here is a portion of the interior page for you which you may find interesting:

"If you thought that Porsche was very generous offering to paint the purchaser’s new 968 in any of 33 available exterior colors over the four year production run you’ll be shocked to learn that the same buyer had 98 different interior configurations to choose from! Why so many? Well, when it came to outfitting a new 968 with an interior the purchaser had 3 decisions to make: 1) color, 2) material, 3) configuration and that resulted in 98 choices. A unique interior code was assigned for each one of those combinations and used by the dealer when ordering a new 968. "

I have most of the codes and they'll be on the site. I know the 944 is a different animal and handled differently then the 968.

Here are the 968 interior colors:

Cashmere/Black
Black
Classic Gray
Marine Blue
Midnight Blue
Light Gray/Black
Light Gray/Classic Gray
Marble Gray/Black
Marble Gray/Midnight Blue
Light Gray/Cobalt Blue
Magenta
Cobalt Blue
Light Gray/Magenta
Chestnut Brown
Special full Leathers

Jeff

As mentioned by Jeff, the interior code is a different animal from the colour code. The colour codes only reflect the colour of the interior (black, linen etc). The interior codes represent, colour and materials. That is, a black full leather interior has a different code than a black partial leather interior than does a black interior with Porsche script cloth seating surfaces. On top of that you have to layer in if the carpets are also black or are deviating from the main interior colour.

Regards,

Todd

For 968s:

Full black leather interior was code VD (have this on my cab)
Full black leather seats only was code VN
Partial black leather seats was code LT (have this on my coupe)

For carpets, for the 968, you got the standard color with your color choice. If you wanted something different (deviated carpet) that was a seperate option with a 5 digit interior code but it would not change the 2 character base interior code.

Jeff,

That's great info. Even though it's info for the 968 I'm sure it applies to the 944 as well.

This is also one of the reasons why I want to make this list for the 944. I just want to have all this sorted out for others that need it.

Lets say there is a person that just bought a 944 and he doesn't know what color his interior is. He can then look at the color code on the sticker in the hatch and then look at the list and tell that he has, linen, full leather. I think this could be helpful for some people.

I've noticed that light grey does have mulitple codes, which would make since with what you are saying. The different codes are meaning that they have full leather, or partial leather. But that's great to know. I believe that one of our option codes is also for full leather seats.

I just figure, the most info that I can gather the more it will help people out in the future.

So please keep it coming guys.

Again, I can't speak for sure about 944s, just 968s. The 92-94.5 light grey is the craziest example. Between the different pairing with 4 colors (black, classic grey, cobalt blue, and magenta) and the variety of material combinations and configurations there are 28 different interior codes associated with light grey alone!!!

Like I said, the type of material used for the interior (leather, cloth, leatherette) is embedded in the 2 character interior code. You would never have a separate option code on a 968 indicating "leather seats". Again, not sure about 944s.

These color numbers for leather and vinyl might be helpful when restoring the interior. Especially for cashmere and champagne.

I know that on the 944 option code 946 is for leather, leather, leatherette seats

This is all very interesting and throws a new spin on the color codes, and still makes it important to get this info.

I don't think the 944 has as many codes as the 968 does, or at least it doesn't seem like it.

From what I can tell, light grey cars are always black and light grey, at least I've never seen anything different. There seems to be less variations for the 944 than the 968.

Cloth on the 944 is also fairly simple, pasha, plaid, and porsche script. Pasha seems to have only came with brown, so it would be the color of the pasha, with brown. Porsche script has a few more options.

So I want to make a complete list, with all these options. Even if there are 100 options for interiors, I want to know them all and make a list. Not only to help others out, but also because it would be cool to know the info.

Thanks Jeff!

Watch the cloth!!!

For the 968s they offered the "Porsche script" and the extremely rare "multi-color fabric" (looks like a plaid). But, just to throw another curve ball you have two cloth variations: 1) the seat inserts only get the cloth where the bolsters are done in leatherette or 2) The full seats areas (tops) are covered in cloth. Again, factor in the interior color and you have that many more codes, even on cloth.

Option code 526 got the cloth carried over on to the door panels.

I knew you'd come through with your encyclopedic knowledge of the 968! Great info.

From my understanding, sort of.

For the series-II 944 interiors, there was Script, Plaid, striped (rare), generic-patterned (like Houndstooth? - very rare). Pascha, to my knowledge, was not offered on a series-II car.

For the series-I 924 and 944 interiors, you could get Script, striped, Pascha, Tweed, and Tartan.

Not all of those options within the series-I/II distinctions were available for every model and year however.

It's very rare, but I've seen a few examples of striped cloth on U.S. series-II 944's. On all occasions I recall it was black cloth with silver (or bronze, white, light gray?) stripes.

Regular patterned cloth is super rare, but I've seen two examples: both on series-II cars. Someone on here has one.

I don't know if Pascha was color specific for the 944, although I think it is most commonly seen with black. On the early 928, you could get Pascha with blue, tan, black, brown, and perhaps others. When with tan, brown or black, the Pascha pattern was white/black, when with blue it was white/blue.

On the subject of color-specific, some interiors typically (or exclusively?) were paired with a certain exterior color. For example, on the Series-II cars I think brown interior most commonly (or perhaps only) came on Kalahari Metallic cars.

You may want to contact PCNA, they would have the list of codes. Whether they give it out is a different story.

Also, since cloth interior is much more common in markets outside of the U.S., you may want to check out RoW cars.

Take care,

I too have some questions about the codes on the build label and the ones found on thr clarks garage list, why the difference? Also, does anyone know how pascha interiors were noted on the window stickers in 924 or 944's? Great team effort here! Thx!
