944 drive train problem

My 1986 944 with 5 speed has a problem after my teenage son used it for one night on the town. When you let off gas to coast in gear it starts to buck and jump, which it did not do before he used the car. I think that there is a clacking noise somewhere behind the clutch but not all of the time. What do you think he did?

Your son needs to buy you a new clutch...............
Probably the rubber center has broken up in the clutch. If the clutch has done over 70k miles it's not all his fault, it's just worn out..however, you don't have to tell him that.

If my dad had ever know half the stuff I did to his 64 Corvair van I wouldn't be writing this right now.

I concure: clutch. From rice racing. We used to call it drag racing. Get the spring center one when you fix it.

After I had to replace one axle, busted the U-joint, and the speedo cable the broken axle took out; I backed off doing the rough stuff.

When was the last time you changed your timing and balance belts and/or cam chain and tensioner?

In truth, it was probably on its way out anyway = though I would venture to guess your son probably helped it meet its maker.

You could squeeze this for months of lawn/chores/cleaning and waxing the car.
