Weird noise

Hi I'm new to the forum and living way down under in New Zealand. I have an 89 944 S2 and looking for some advice on a weird noise my car is making.

After I have been driving for about 15 minutes I get a dull hum that starts straight after I change gear and release the clutch pedal. It lasts about 5 seconds initially but the longer I drive, the longer the noise carries on until after about 40 minutes it is there all the time. The noise is consistent and doesn't appear to increase or decrease with RPM. If I press the clutch pedal in, the noise disappears straight away but comes back as soon as I release the pedal. Potential clutch problem?

Car has done 170,000kms (106,000 Miles) and is in good condition. I have only had it a few months. The previous owner had it for a number of years and did a lot of maintenance work.

Any advice appreciated.

transaxle noise, most likely, or the torque tube bearings are making noise. as things heat up, it gets worse. i'd try changing the transaxle oil, first. if that doesn't help, i am going with the torque tube bearings.

good luck.

Agreed...if the fluid works, that is great, but you will likely need to look at replacing the bearings

is the clutch pedal returning all the way? if not, i suppose it could be the throw-out bearing.

The pedal appears to be fully returning but I will double check tonight.

The funny thing was when I heard it the first time, it sounded like it was coming from the under the dash/firewall on the RH passenger side. The car is LHD.

Appreciate the advice.

Hum

I have the exact same noise coming from my car right now. I'm pretty sure that it is coming from the torque tube. It only happens after I am driving for 20 minutes or so, just enough time for the bearings to heat up.
