Quick rev limit question

I was wondering...Does bouncing off the fun limiter, err I mean rev limiter, hurt my car? i have done it several times, once goin' down the quarter at sears point, and It sounds painful. If I just put it in say...2 and held the gas...would all the violence hurt my engine? I have never had a rev limiter before (took my ol' 87 accord to 7200 when line was at 6...but that doesn't count) and am curious. When the tires are spinning...on accident of course...in first gear would the engine bouncing off the limiter be bad? You know...for those quick 2 lane U turns. Lately I have been trying to wear away some pesky flatspots...and It got me thinking...thanks. Also what seems to be a reasonably priced early S. You know...the dependable type. Thanks again.

no, the car is built to take it without a problem. it is a violent FEEL to tell you "hey, quit it!". it won't damage anything though unless you drive all day long trying to do 55mph in first gear.

but you're fine. i have the rev limit raised to 7,000rpm in my car and i've hit it. i hit the limiter in every car i've owned and never had a problem.

as long as your car is getting proper lubrication, the belts and hoses are okay, and it's in tune, you're fine.

Have to agree on that, though by raising the limiter (my 951 has the limit raised as well) you will exceed FACTORY specs. Meaning the engine can have it, but don't do it too much. When hitting the factory limit there's no real problem at all, the engine is designed to run at that rpm, but you shouldn't keep it at the limiter too long though, just touching it now and then in 2nd when between two hard corners is no problem at all.

When you hit the rev limiter you are on the down side the power range of the engine. You should have shifted just bit earlier.

I do think that the rev limiter could be just a bit softer when you come up on it.

What exactly is the rev limit for our cars? I've had mine at an indicated 7000rpm a few times and I didn't feel a limiter kicking in....

When I want max acceleration I usuallyshift at 6.5K.

The rev limiter tells your DME to open injectors every other time, so it's like running out of gas 3,250 times a min. untill your Dme kicks it back to full time. No harm no foul

Factory limit:6500rpms

Hmmm, that's interesting. Can't a chip raise your rev limit? The PO of my car mentioned that the engine had a chip in it, but the guy did not seem that informed, so I thought maybe it was some BS the guy who owned it before him said. Now I don't know.

aye, they usually do. From what I've seen, the SOP of chippers is 7,000 rpms, tho 7,500 I've heard of, but I wouldn't go that high. That being the case, I would think that you could do away with the limit altogether, if you didn't like your car very much.

You have to remove the coil wire and replace it with an Etch-a-Sketch if you plan to go over 7250rpm's.

At least the DME does the rev limiting and not the rotor in the dist cap.

I've had my rotor limit my rev. wouldn't go a lick over 0rpms.
