another power steering - less 944

Another one of my 944's starting spewing power steering fluid out of the rack seals. That makes 2 of mine (1 is a parts car) with massive leaks (both 85.5's) and 1 that still hasn't started to leak yet (1987 944S).

Has anyone yet found a place to get these seals? I read all about liability this and liability that (sounds like a bunch of B.S. to me) of why places can't sell us the seals. Sounds more like a friggin' monopoly. Sure, the steering rack would respond *better* if the entire thing was rebuilt, but for the $ "they" (rack rebuilders) want, I'll deal with manual steering.

My 924s is doing something of that sort, i still need to figure out exactly what tho... heh. It's spewing power steering fluid, but we've yet to figure out from where (getting this little beast on a swing-out arm lift is unrealistic). *sigh*

Guess i'm going to be jacking up the car today as my power steering fluid (ATF) is getting sprayed on the engine and is roasting up in a nice and disturbingly thick and smelly cloud of smoke. Any suggestion as to what i should look for? i'm not much of a mechanic, but i'm slowly starting to learn (my friends are car fiends, go figure). Thanks for any help on the matter.

Cool

"Well the ol steering rack drama."

I had mine overhauled and it leaked after a week, so I decided to do it myself.

I went to a common auto store, took the seals as a sample and found that the lip seals and orings are all standard automobile size. The teflon rings in the diverter valve, may still be used.

Under the piston, which is being held by 2 circlips( stupid design ) there are 2 o-rings. Make sure that you replace the circlips as well with the same thickness. If not, then they will pop out and destroy your steering tube.

Buy all the rubber seals and o-rings in Vitton, high temp material.

Make sure you completely flush the system and that all dirt particles are removed..Do not hold the unit in a vice...If the piston liner of the steering rack is squashed then you have to get another one...Good luck.

I'll preface this by saying, i've never actually pulled my rack apart looking for seals, but..... Coupe is right, seals are standard sizes, and the ones you remove should have numbers, and a manufacturer name on them. Any good auto parts store (not a big chain store) should be able to cross reference the numbers, and be able to order replacements, they don't even need to know what they are being used for. I've had good luck doing this in the past for seals that weren't even automotive.

Or... you can post the manufacturer and numbers here, i have the interchange books also, i can give you part numbers for more commonly available seals.

as far as o-rings go, they are also standard sizes, but probably somewhat more difficult to obtain. Since o-rings are so cheap, most places won't sell you less than a bag of 100. If you do find someone to sell you 1 or 2 o-rings, you'll probably end up paying about the same as you would for a bag of 100.

This would be a great project!

It would be invaluable to have a list of all the seals that must be replaced during a rebuild!

Specially if we knew t he domestic seal that can be used!
