Dear members
i know i am opening a massive can of the wrigglies here....but what are the recommendations for oil for the non turbo 944?
Synth, semi synth of old mineral GTX?

And is it really important to have ZDDP ?

thanks for your patience.

While you take cover, you can take two Tylenols and do a search on the topic ... there are tons of different opinions, more than enough to make you dizzy

Either Dino or Synth 20w50 will be just fine as long as it's a quality oil.

Sure, I did already. That's why i wanted the feedback of members on the forum as there seems to be 2 schools - one is mineral GTX (with no zddp) or Mobil 1 fully synth. But no one seems to have a clear singular view.

I can't help feeling that Mobil 1 fully synth would do the engine some favours

This thread could go on forever......But don't put synthetic into an engine that has lotsa miles running dino oil. Promise ya...your gonna do nothing but "make it leak" from everywhere! My nonturbo has 144,000 miles, has had nothing but Shell Rotella 20W40 (dino) year round in Kentucky heat/cold for it's entire life. Never been apart, (belts, water pumps & pullys Sure!) Great oil pressure, never a whimper & DRY. But thats my opinion ....based on my experience.

sorry, that was a typo due to a very old laptop which will soon be chucked off the balcony once i replace it.

"Ideal oil" it was meant to read.

So, you're saying that a zddp oil is only relevant for a turbo?

Hi, I think he wanted to say that higher zddp levels than the ones that you find in "ordinary'' modern oils would be recommended both for turbo and naturally aspirated engines.

MJ,

To make it simple ... i use Mobil 1 15W50 synthetic in both my 89 911 with a 3.6 transplant as well as my 944 SP2 race car ...
Been using it for the past 6 years on my 911 and no it didn't cause my engine to leak everywhere as i personally think that's a myth.
The ZZDP is more critical on flat tappett engines like the 3.2 !

Cheers

thanks Phil. Appreciate that. But if that is the case (zddp), why go to the Mobil 15/50 when GTX 20/50 dino would be perfectly adequate. Just curious. And thanks for your patience on a subject which tends to rattle people quite a bit.

For a hot area like you are in, you want a thick oil like a 20W50 non synthetic oil, using synthetic could, and probably will cause the seals to leak because synthetic is so much smaller molecules than dino oil, that it will find areas to slip through. I use Valvoline VR-1 racing 20W50 oil in my 85.5 Porsche 944 because it has more ZPPD than most other oils.

Yes, I meant in both n/a and turbo. In turbo it's probably more important due to extra heat in the system but really, it doesn't matter. Both motors should run an oil that has the appropriate ZDDP package. You can also have too much of it by the way, but there aren't very many oils available with that content.
