Changing Instrument Clusters ???

We bought an 87 944 n/a that needs the instrument cluster replaced. Any cluster I get will need to have the mileage change to the orginal miles but is this possible w/o damaging the speedo? If possible, how do I do this?

Why does the instrument cluster need replaced?

Yes you can carefully open up the speedo and reset the milage.

The PO (not the POS as previously posted....oops) tried to replace the factory gauges faceplate with a white faceplate and trashed the speedo in the process.

Never could figure out why some owners just have to have the trashy looking white face gauges.

I was proud when my son said that "If it came from the factory black, then he wanted to leave it black". I admite that there are a few cars that look good w/ white gauges, but not tour 944!

If you have a series 2 944 (85.5+) there is no way to set the odometer.

you should just make an annotation of the current mileage before you replace the current one.

WARNING: Replacing the entire instrument cluster will cost in excess of $1500. Determine what the problem is and order accordingly. If you need part numbers, we can provide them for you.

The speedo unit (referring to So Cal's pic, the unit is #9) needs to be replaced. I can either get one from a salvage yard or buy one new.

AFJuvat, I agree with you (or your buddy)!

It's really fairly simple to replace the speedometer in these cars.

Any 85.5 or later will work, as they all use the same gauges. If you must replace the gauge, buy a used cluster. Used instrument clusters are sold regularly on E-bay for around $100. Of course people parting out cars will have them as well.

I know the 951 has the MPG on the tach in the cluster, the question is if you replace a 944 N/A with a 951 cluster,

A. will it work?
B. will the MPG gauge work?

Curious.

Another stupid question....What is a MPG gauge? Is it "miles per gallon"?

If so, who would give a s... that your mileage is in a Porsche?

It was a stupid federal emissions thing on some imports. Same as that stupid "upshift light."

The upshift light can be useful, it just needs to be programed to come on just before redline!!!

Then we can call it a "Shift" light!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gallons Per Mile and with a sub scale Gallons Per Hour (really more useful). The GPM is only useful in fifth gear.

Some years/models have them. Some don't and use the "Shift NOW Idiot" light.

Yes the sub gauges innards are more accessible with the post 85.5 instruments than the canned and sealed early model instruments.
