Worn out 944s are abundant- parts are expensive.

Hmmmm,
I think you should start looking at what used parts sell for from "one" of the biggest:
dC AutomotiveOver 140,000 square feet of new and used Porsche parts

..and then use search to find about 6 major used part sellers on Pelican..

then look at the Pelican forum on used parts for sale,

and finally ebay and craigslist.

Not worth it unless you specialize and stay away from the base 944.

For a beat N/A 944, for it to be really worth your time (parting, shipping, selling, etc), I would say you need to buy it at $1000 or less.

John,

You mean all that money I spent on my 84 is for naught?

Paid 500 for mine complete with no intention of parting it out. Don't expect it to be a cheap car when finished but do expect it to be like new. My thought was that anything else I bought would eventually need complete rebuild anyway so why not just buy cheap and dig in. Don't always want to drive my 911 around.

I bought a 84. not running for 650$ guy started pulling head and got scared. (Kicker is he had head gasket set and tune up parts) Im prepping for paint now. I also got a 83 for 750$ that had fried fuel pump, with bad DME Im also Prepping for paint too. Parts are cheap used compared to Aircooled. Hit up Plyhammers or John Graves. Im totally sucked into the 944 s real fun to work on and the bodys dont even look dated, real good looking cars , I would even be on board for a 924s or a 931.

Whatever you spend on a "cheap" 944, plan on spending at least, that again in getting it "roadable". Then you'll be looking at the rubber stuff: Tires, belts, seals. The cosmetic stuff like the dash, upholstery, and don't forget the electrical stuff: radio, speakers, flaky relays, temp switches and then, (horns in fanfare) water leaks from the battery box, sunroof tubes and the delaminating rear hatch.

So, in my opinion, there is no such thing as a "cheap" 944. Knowing this in advance, the adventure isn't so painful, especially if you don't mind spending your weekends on your back.

Some people try to turn back their "odometers." Not me. I want people to know 'why' I look this way. I've traveled a long way and some of the roads weren't paved.
