944S Toasted Head, Recommended Parts List???
Hello all, I have a 87 944S whose chain tensioner failed. (Yes on the 16V cars there is a chain tensioner to run the extra camshaft on the head). Anyway, as is the standard warning the worst happened and bent all 16 valves in the head. My question to the experts is what should my NEW parts list look like. The head does not appear to have any cracks around the failed chain tensioner so a simple repalcement should do. The valve stems were still a good fit to the guides, do you guys think I should replace the valave guides? Can I lap the New valves to the old seats? Or do I need new seats.
So far my parts list consists of: 16 new valves 8X 92810564105 8X 92810564205 16 new valve seals 92810460104 New Chain Adjuster 94410504900 New Timing Chain 94410550101 Set of Belts, Seals and Rollers Head Gasket Set Aaron Sudds Windsor Ontario 1987 924S 1987 944S (Bad Head) 1987 911 Carrera atsudds@cogeco.ca |

Dude, bring it to a machinst and have him decide. I just brought mine to a shop and told him to work on it with a budget and he did a great job. I ordered all my parts and everything to save money. The machinst will thoroghly inspect the head and let you know what he thinks should be done. THe guy I brought mine too was very honest about it.

definately new valve seals are in order.
Also check the axial play of the valves - they may look good from the top, but be knocked out of round on the bottom. check the play with a new valve. check the height and squareness of the valve springs. replave valve keepers. valve seats should be fine as long as they are not damaged. check the sprockets on the camshafts for cracks and/or missing teeth. Have the head cleaned then check again for cracks. take it to a machine shop to make sure the head is flat and square. AFJuvat

hi Aaron ! sorry to hear about your misfortune! looks like you are in for a "fun" time, with the repair. i assume that you will be doing most of the work yourself, or at least, the vast majority.
overseas motors has stopped doing porsche work, as you probably know, and i have reservations about the guy on drouillard road. {twin-cam motors}. if you need any help, dont hesitate to give me a shout. btw, what part of windsor are you in? regards, bob. |

update! if your cylinder head is not flat, and requires machining, then this is no problem, as i work in a local toolroom.
let me know, either way! bob. |

Sorry to hear about the car. Windsor brings back many memories. Spent many a weekend up there during college. Good time for all to enjoy Cadillac Jacks. Also Cheetah's wasn't that bad. Haven't been there in years. Like I said though, Great Memories.

asudds - if you don't mind me asking, was there any "warning" that the tensioner was going?
I recently changed out the top pad on my tensioner (the one that fails the most), but am going to do the whole tensioner this winter. Just looking for some clues to look for....just incase - already went through the 8 bent valves sega! 944S Boyeee |

I am having my head reubilt right now. I had to replace my valve springs as well. They were not meeting the spreads. I had a head gasket blow out and flood the rear cylinder, and caused one valve to completely blow out, and messed up the others as well. All the springs had to be replaced.
Make sure your machinist checks your springs to make sure your valves are closing properly or you might end up with another big problem after you get it back.
