i tryed search first but.....Motor mounts?

Hi, i am installing my motor mounts probably tommorrow. I know i have read posts about what to do on here but i searched and didnt find everything i wanted to know. It sounds like all i need to do is lower the crossmember, just loosen it to fit the motor mounts in there? Someone also said i need new bolts. thanks

John

Sorry John, I have no clue (I've never done motormounts on anything other then my Jet Ski). Although, you just made me wonder something. Who makes the best motormounts for the 944?

aye, two new bolts per mount. New nut and washer, also, if they don't come with the package. Use a jack to lower the crossmember so as to not put undo stress on the things that could suffer from it.

HEHE, oops, I forgot the part where ya use a wooden block under the oilpan, or support engine from top or you'll be peeing up the proverbial stick

It is a lot easier if you support the engine from the top - gives you a lot more room to work under there. A lot of rental places will rent a cherry picker for a day or 2 for $20 or so - money well spent - if you have a few other 944 owners in the ares, you can gather to do a mass engine mount change.

The OEM mounts are more expensive than the aftermarket ones but much more durable.

You may end up wanting / needing to loosen the A-arms. If you do - mark their position BEFORE you remove them from the body rails! Alignment is a bear to do yourself (for me, it's just plain impossible), and this is the easy way to avoid messing it up.

A number of people have had difficulty re-attaching the crossmember after replacement - if that's the case for you, don't worry, just keep dissassembling and reassembling until everything fits nicely back together (I posted on this about a year ago and there was a recent post at rennlist.com).

Finally, when you get the new shorter bolts (two each side, to replace the bolts that go from the "top-down") make SURE you have the right pitch on them; I stripped new mounts and had to helacoil them (spelling?). That's a pain!

Good luck - take pictures and post them for next year's crew who haven't done this job yet!

Don't forget you will need an alignment after loosening the crossmember bolts.

BTW if you need a cherry picker, you can use mine for free. It's only about a 15min drive from Loveland. The cherry picker method is very easy and very safe. It allows you to wiggle the engine, which really helps you align it to the mounts.

Shoot me an email if you need it.

Speaking from personal experience, i think the easiest way for a do it yourselfer is to whip off the wheels, support the car, push the engine up a bit with a jack and a block of wood (4X4 works great) and just yank the crossmember. You can get to the mounts easier and it saves alot of frustration getting to the mount bolts. An alignment is inevitable even if you mark everything, so just take that into consideration.
I actually had to do some serious drilling since my motor mount bolts were really old and rusted, but other than that it was cake.
Good luck and don't forget to bring a pillow... neck cramps suck!

Uhmmm A couple of years ago I managed to just jack the engine up with a block of wood... pulled the wheels of, loosened the sway bar... did not drop the cross member...

And slipped them in... did one side at a time..... jacking up ever so carefully on the right side of engine then on the left....

..or just pull the engine and do it all...

Hey thanks alot for all the information, i will try to do it like one person said by not loosining the crossmember and just loosining the swaybar, but whatever it takes i will do, i guess i should go straight to ACE hardware and get the bolts and nuts for the motor mounts before i put them in huh that way i can take the mounts with me to get the nuts, thanks guys

The bolts are two different sizes on the early model. don't know about the late. If you don't have to drive your car around, I'd take the bolts out of the MM's in your car, that way you can get a perfect match.
