1989 S2 struts

To replace front struts in an 89 S2 requires the full assembly correct? Not just the inserts?

I just sold an 83 with koni adustables and an 86 with brand new bilstiens. My newly acquired S2 bounces all over the place and needs help!

Yes, or do the hacksaw Koni option.

How important is it to pair the front struts with rear shocks?

Meaning koni sports in the front and say bilstiens in the back.

The koni sport rears are only adjustable if you remove them correct?

I will probably never do that and the bilstiens I believe are 20-30 bucks cheaper per side.

My 83 had koni sports front and cheapos in the back and it felt great but I am comparing that to my S2 which has blown front and rear shocks.

I run my S2 with Bilsteins at the rear. No issues.
Bilsteins bare a bit more durable too.

You usually match the shocks to the springs so it won’t make any difference using Koni up front and Bilstein at the back. In my experience you really only adjust the rear adjustable Koni’s once or twice, to experiment, and when they feel right you leave them alone. You only might need to adjust them again if you change the torsion bar spring rate, so having to remove to adjust them is not a big issue.

My understanding is there is a difference in the return damping between the various gas shocks and struts. Regarding damping on the rebound some do/ some don't have adjustments, and some no damping at all. Return damping might affect handling adn feel.

Might want to do a search on Pelican for more info. I recall several discussions about this but difficult to remember specifics...

Regards

Bilstein and Koni rear dampers were a factory option for the S2. Either shock will perform well for street use with stock torsion bars. I have had both on my street S2.
